Sweet A-10 video

The sound you hear is the Gatling style gun mounted to the front of the A-10 (see pic). It's such an amazing aircraft.

Awesome video. I liked the "nice" comment. How many rounds does that Gatling gun through in a second? What kind of rounds?

It's a 30mm gun and can go through up to 4,200 rounds a minute. It's the PERFECT aircraft for the war in Afghanistan.

It carries 3 different types of rounds:

1) training round that is shot everyday at the range and was the primary round during OIF
2) high explosive incendiary that has a lethal radius of 75 feet per round and explodes on impact and is the primary round being used in OEF
3) depleted uranium that is used to destroy tanks and other armor vehicles but this round is vary rarely used and was going to be the primary round for a possible war against the Eastern Bloc in the Fulda Gap of Germany
Also there is a combat mix carried of 5:1 high explosive incendiary rounds to depleted uranium rounds that is used to destroy not only the tank but the people inside also

The GAU-8 carries 1350 rounds total and shoots approx 75 rounds per second; 69 rounds in the first second b/c of the spin-up time but then 75 rounds per second after that. Really though, the gun can only be fired for about a max of 3 seconds b/c any longer than that, the accuracy starts to diminish and the barrels start to heat up to wear the rounds can explode in the chamber.

If I recall correctly the A-10 was designed around the gun, as opposed to the gun being designed for the aircraft. Those suckers can take a crazy amount of damage and stay airborne back to base.

Back in the previous life, nothing was more sweet than knowing we had an A-10 on station as support. I trusted those flying tanks more than anything else the air force had to keep the bad guys at bay.

As of right now, the A-10C is projected to be in the AF until 2025. So by then, the powers that be will come out with a new replacement that is even better than the JSF!!!

Until the Air Force trades it off to the Army for ADA assets or otherwise tries to get it out of the inventory like they've been trying to for the last 25 years. I love the MDS, but it's always been the bastard stepchild of the Air Force aviation community (aside from the guys that fly things without wings) since it doesn't do "pretty" things like the rest of the Air Force does.

I hope it's around that long though!
