Cartersville - best town in the state

My congrats to tiny (5 houses?) Cartersville, Iowa.

The best - bar none - Ragbrai town I've seen in 10 years of riding.

Sheriff shuts down Cartersville party, alleges half-naked participants

I was there from about 11-1:30, so unfortunately I missed this "partial nudity" that got it shut down. We didn't see any, just a few gals in sports bras - which is probably enough to call "partial nudity" around here.

Anyway, if anyone knows the Hanigs (sp?) (they had a Cyclone rock in their yard) let them know that ragbrai'ers near and far were impressed - best stop on the route.

That cracks me up! I used to spend a lot of time at Cartersville as a kid. They used to have an elevator there that was actually a pretty busy place. At one time they had a General Store too!

Good to see the place still has some life!

I think the elevator in Cartersville is still in business. Looked busy the last time I drove through there. Good to see North Iowa showing the rest of the State how to party!

The Hanigs are Cyclones! Nick (owner of the "pond") went to ISU- 02/03 grad.

Tell the truth. The party got "shut down" when you decided to join the half naked crowd, and then everyone dispersed on their own.

And the elevator is still going strong, have a T-Shirt to prove it and know the family well, I think the Hanigs are either relatives or very good friends of the owners. The Owners of the Elevator are on this site, or at least their sons are! Great people up there, awesome rep for a small Iowa town!

if I have 1 regret in my life its that I didn't make it off that swing - the line was around the lake and was like a 40 min wait. still - I've been kicking myself. Settled for a couple times down the slip and slide. there's a mental image for you - me all soapy in nothing biking shorts.

Did anyone hear about a motorcyclist found in a ditch north of Parkersburg? Somebody said a ragbrai rider found him while taking a leak - you couldn't see the crash from the road apparently.

I'm very good friends w/ really everyone who lives in Cartersville. The elevator is still running owned by the Weiners, Nick Hanigs mother is a Weiner and works for the elevator there. I actually talked to the owner of the pond yesterday, and he said the whole thing was blown way out of proportion by the cops. He said there was like 3 girls that went topless off the rope (which is awesome by the way the rope that is), and there were a few guys on the rope that were mooning people and that was about it for nudity. Nick was actually standing right next to the cop when a girl jumped off topless and asked "what should i do?" the cop responded to go up there and tell them to stop, and basically thats it....then all of a sudden like 7 state troopers rolled in and started booting people. The problem is w/ the newspapers, as they say that a "half naked party gets busted", but they never mention that all of the money generated there were for non-profit organizations, they used workers from Hanig Construction and from the Elevator to run the party, which means both of those companies were basically shut down for the day....Newspapers just look at the negatives which is pretty sad....

pretty accurate ... wish I would've hung around for the 3 girls

it was just a good time that people that weren't there got excited about writing about. Ragbrai isn't nearly as crazy as non-ragbrai'ers think it is.

anyone whos had a college party busted knows the "reasons" cops can shut you down - most focus on too much fun occuring in one area.

Thanks for all of the positive comments! Nick has put a lot of hard work into the pond and it is nice that others are able to enjoy it! If you are ever in the area again stop by for a swing!
Oh and by the way crooksie... I graduated from ISU too! How could you forget? Class of 2001

Hey, news flash guys: NO ONE wants to see your bare hairy *****...not even the gals!

The cops probably were OK with everything until they saw the clueless guys and nearly barfed up their morning donuts. Can't blame the cops at that point for shutting it down.

That thing was awesome. My number one pass-through town (is it really even a town?) on the trip. And I also missed the nudity, but I did catch banana man taking the plunge in full banana gear.
