Not unless you preloaded something on it for tracking. Did they keep alot of personal stuff on there?

The last couple Dell's I've bought had LoJack (or something like that) preloaded and free for a year.
Of course, you have to set it up....
I doubt if they had anything on it. They did have Google chat installed so if the person logs in I can have a chat with them :)
I'd call up a couple of my pipe hitting ******* with a pair of pliars and a blow torch.

Well if they didnt have any personal finance or any way of the theif tracking them home, then I guess they take it as a low cost loss. At least it wasnt a high price laptop. Either way it sucks.
3 Years ago our boss had his MacBookPro stolen at the CES trade show. The idiot who stole it tried to log on to our work server the week after the show and access/download some files. Our IT department was able to track the IP and get the guy's location. FBI became involved and eventually arrested the guy and recovered the laptop for our company.
Had the guy just wiped it clean and sold it, he'd have probably gotten away clean.
I'm not sure what you can do on an individual basis, but good luck.

I had a buddy whose laptop got stolen at the design college when I was in school. He got it back 6 months later or so. I believe someone in the design school bought the laptop off ebay and found all the files and returned it to him. Ames Police then tracked the seller through ebay. My friend ended up with 2 laptops as it was insured, but outdated enough that the insurance didn't claim the found laptop. The only major loss was the fact that he had all his work on it and it was originally stolen the week before finals.
Keep an eye out on Craigslist or Ebay for awhile for someone local trying to sell the same item. I know someone that had an ipod stolen and actually wound up filing a police report and recovered it when some punk kid posted it on craigslist and they were able to track it down to his stolen ipod by the serial number. Sometimes the thief is just that dumb.
