Electrical Outlet

Last weekend, my dad and I replaced a bunch of outlets in my house with tamper resistant ones. (no more plastic plug covers!)
Anyway we have a couple outlets that are on a switch. Only the top plug is on the switch, and the bottom is on all the time. After we swapped out the outlets with the new ones, the switch doesn't do anything and the plug is hot all the time.
I think there may be a tab on the side of the outlet that I need to break off to sever the connection between the top and bottom plug. Is this correct?
