AMES, Iowa – With each new athletic season comes a renewed sense of optimism and the 2008-09 Iowa State women’s basketball season is no different. The Cyclones return 100 percent of their scoring from a season ago and have added four talented freshmen to the mix for the upcoming campaign.
The Cyclones got the new season under way Tuesday afternoon by holding their annual media day at Hilton Coliseum. Student-athletes and coaches answered questions and posed for photos for numerous media outlets and finished the day off by taking their official team photo.
“We are looking forward to getting started,”
ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “It’s hard to believe it’s my 14th year here. I think (Cyclone women’s basketball) is something that we’ve watched grow and we certainly want to continue. We want to have a program our fans are proud of, our University is proud of and that is fun for our fans to watch.”
The 2008-09 season is full of promise with a ton of experience returning to the roster and the greatest depth in Fennelly’s tenure at Iowa State. The 2007-08 squad experienced a wealth of success despite facing considerable adversity throughout the campaign. The Cyclones made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with two of their starting post players (Toccara Ross and Nicky Wieben) on the bench due to season-ending knee injuries. Both Ross and Wieben and are back for their senior season and are joined by fellow seniors Heather Ezell, Amanda Nisleit and Jocelyn Anderson.
