Re: Tyler Colvin injured by broken bat

I would actually like to see a video of this as well. It is one of those things which you always know is a possibility but have never heard of happening. With that said, I am really glad he is okay. Hopefully he'll be back on the field soon.

edit: saw the video on youtube. Looks like it hurt but it wasn't that serious. He got lucky it hit him where it did and not anywhere more vulnerable. That could have been really scary.

MLB needed to do something about the flying broken bats issue a long time ago. Maybe this will finally spur change.

Not sure what MLB could do, aluminum bats would be even worse.

Good luck finding infielders with the sprouts big enough to play against these guys swinging aluminum bats. It sucks the guy got speared, but it's the first time I've ever heard of it in the 30 years I've been alive. How many at bats have been in that time? I think the odds are good to keep going as is.

All they need to do is ban maple bats. Those are the ones that shatter and splinter. If they go to all ash bats, the risk is significantly reduced.

This has been an issue and debated for quite a few years now.

And what wood do you suggest MLB going to after the emerald ash borer has destroyed the ash population in America?

Bottom line is it was a freak accident. If we as a population overreacted to every single freak accident we'd all be living in padded rooms and straight jackets.

Google "MLB maple bat injury" and tell me it's a freak accident. This is happening all the time now. There are dozens of injuries this year alone, including some to fans.

    An article from '08.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...cci.maplebats/

Pirates hitting coach Don Long and a fan at Dodger Stadium, Susan Rhodes, have been struck in the face by broken maple bats. In recent years right-handed pitcher Rick Helling, while pitching in the minor leagues, was impaled in the left arm by a broken bat, a 15-inch shard penetrating three inches into his arm.
