Gene Chizik !
Case closed. His success depends on Gus Malzahn and superior athletes. But he can't coach
Re: Most overrated player/coach?
Les Miles is THE WORST coach in regards to time management in the country. I have seen more boneheaded time management from him than I have all other coaches combined.

Touche.
Re: Most overrated player/coach?
I always thought Gary Payton was very overrated as an NBA player in his prime. He'd have never been in my top 10-15 picks if I was starting an NBA team from scratch, yet he was considered a superstar. He got a lot of run out of taking a team to the finals out of a horrible Western Conference. At best he was the 4th-5th best point guard of his era. On defense, let's just say a glove makes a lot of steady contact with a hand, for whatever reason he was officiated like Jordan even though he was only a good-not-great player, guy could work the zebras like few others.
Elway was a great NFL QB for sure, but I think he's often elevated to "greatest of all time" discussions when he really doesn't belong with some others there.

NBA-Phil Jackson. Even I could win at least 6 championships with Jordan and Bryant both in their primes.
NFL-Tony Romo. All hype; no return.
MLB-Derek Jeter. GREAT leader, but on ability alone, not that great.
I like this one, he is talked about a lot as a great player but I dont see it.
Another one that I hate to mention as a Bears fan is Brian Urlacher. He isnt even the best LB on the Bears team (Briggs)
Re: Most overrated player/coach?
Les Miles really isn't overrated at all. Most people are thinking he will be fired sometime soon.
Agree on Tom Brady actually. I have never understood the logic that players somehow get better if they win a Superbowl. Doesn't that mean that they just have better players around them? Championships shouldn't be the only thing that matters when trying to decide how good a player is.

Why doesn't Elway belong in that discussion? He probably was one of the best pure talents that have ever played the position and he constantly was winning games with sub par teams until his last two years when he was finally surrounded with some weapons.

Isn't Urlacher in his 11th season or something though?
In his prime the guy was a freakish athlete for his size causing all kinds of chaos on nearly every play. He was battling injuries two years ago, missed last season, now looks pretty solid again this year. In his prime I think he had the best lateral movement I've seen from a linebacker, he was like a magnet to every play.
I live in Chicago, but not a Bears fan, actually mildly annoyed by bearsss SNL superfan sports talk radio here.

Too bad Phil Jackson didn't win 6, he is on 11 and counting. Yeah, he has had great talent around him, but as the GMac era should have shown all of us, the ability to manage egos and maintain team chemistry is as much a part of successful coaching at top levels as is managing the x's and the o's. When you get to the ego level of a Bryant or a Shaq and you can make that work and win, you are a great coach, period.

I guess I never considered him the top QB of his own playing days, let alone of all time. Marino and Favre (debatable if Favre is same era) were more prolific, Montana was just as clutch if not more in big games, Young was just as productive if not more on a per start basis. Part of it is that for a while Denver fans acted like he was the greatest of all time as if it were a fact, no sports star has a more elevated status in "their town" than Elway... maybe Ditka in Chi.

Part of the reason Jackson is great is that modern superstars want to play for him and are generally happy while playing for him (with a few notable exceptions), solid role players are attracted to contracts with his teams. Pat Riley has the same thing going.
Scott Skiles is a very, very good coach. But veteran players don't like him and he'll never be a "superstar" team coach. Just the reality of the 90s, 00s, 10s NBA.
Re: Most overrated player/coach?
Tony dungy and Mack brown couldn't do anything great until they had Manning and vince young

The western conference wasn't that bad that year. The problem was the greatest single team in a year in the NBA was playing in the east. Everyone was amazed that Chicago last any games at all that year. It was ridiculous. Any other year that Sonics team has a chance to win the title. Payton may not have been as good as advertised, but I respect a guy that built his legacy playing defense, not hurling the ball up from all places on the court.

Have you seen them play this year? Urlacher, who is finally healthy for the first time in about 4 years, is by far the best LB on that team. If anything, I would put Briggs in the category of overrated, as he had two good seasons, got a huge contract, and disappeared. Your statement was correct two years ago, but not now.

Games where he tried to make LSU lose and his talented players wouldn't let him
Vince Carter- Maybe not so much anymore but for years people threw him in as one of the best in the NBA. Never saw it.
Tom Brady- Here me out! Here me out! I think Tom Brady is a great QB. A Hall of Fame QB. I just don't think he is a top 3 QB of all time like I hear some say. I think he has been part of a great organization with a fantastic coach and has used that to become a great QB. But when Cassell when's 10 games there when he hasn't started a game since he was a high school kid....you have to wonder how much is Brady and how much is the system. Like I said, love Brady's game, sure Hall of famer. Top 3? No way IMO. So a tad overrated
Who do you guys say?
Les Miles? Overrated?
No, Les is not overrated...that would imply that people think you are "all that" and if you are paying attention you will see that most people clearly agree that he is just not that good of a coach.
Overpaid, yes...not overrated. Damn nice guy but in way over his head in the SEC at LSU.
