Why can't Steve Mariucci get a job?
With the recycling of head coaches all of the time, I'm just curious why he doesn't get a shot. Seems like he got jobbed at San Fran from their over-inflated expectations at the time, and then the only opportunity that he got after that was Detroit, which we all know is a coaching graveyard. Was he that bad? Even as a 49ers fan, I disagreed with his firing. I just couldn't figure it out. Seemed like a great coach to develop quarterbacks.
Re: Why can't Steve Mariucci get a job?
He is buddy, buddy with Tom Izzo so his name was floated out there for the michigan St. job that D'antonio got. His name was also out there for the Stanford job that harbaugh got as well. 5-7 years ago he was a hot commodity, not so much now. Maybe he is content at working for the NFL network or where ever he is working now.
Re: Why can't Steve Mariucci get a job?
He could if he wanted one. Look at some of the guys that are head coaches nowe is better than quite a few of them. He either A) doesn't want a job or B) won't go coach in a bad organization.
Re: Why can't Steve Mariucci get a job?
I'm guessing he is compensated pretty well for his current gig on NFL network. Low stress, no travel, looks like he has fun, and he's really good at it. Why leave unless the perfect scenario presents itself?
Re: Why can't Steve Mariucci get a job?
Jon Gruden will be back in the coaching gig soon.

Other people will be coaching, too.

He isn't coaching now, is he?
Re: Why can't Steve Mariucci get a job?
I understand the stress of coaching, and I'm sure that plays a part. He just seemed like a solid coach stuck in an uncomfortable situation. Heck, even though it would NEVER happen, I'd love to have him back at the 49ers, they could use somebody that knows how to coach up quarterbacks.

good point. :twitcy:
Re: Why can't Steve Mariucci get a job?
Probably for the same reason McCarney won't be coaching anytime soon, either - bad reputation. Isn't he basically the guy who is blamed with the demise of the 49ers, whether it truly was his fault or not?

Is he? His teams were generally pretty competitive, I thought.
Dennis Erickson was the guy who sunk them.
And let's not forget Eddie DeBartolo.

I think Mooch is generally (unrightfully) blamed. He followed two hall of fame coaches that had to hall of fame quarterbacks and was left with Jeff Garcia (yes, he did have Young for a couple years), Jerry Rice on the downside and an aging defense and still held it together for 10-12 wins a season.
Re: Why can't Steve Mariucci get a job?
Ownership and no foresight sunk the 49ers. I was content with Mooch (didn't hate him, didn't love him) and never thought he should have been fired.
