This. Soccer is recreation in the US. It's a way a life in some countries.

If it were football NFL style I would be outragged.
the 1994 World Cup set the record for tickets sold and attendance. How many Europeans are gonna want to travel to the middle east?

    Russia would be cool.

Qatar, no so much. Wonder which needy countries they are going to donate those buildings to.

90% of FIFAs revenues come from the World Cup. And considering that the US set the all-time attendance record when it hosted in 1994 FIFA would have a large financial incentive to have another US-hosted WC. And I would argue that the US has many more interested soccer fans now than in 1994. Soccer doesn't have to rule the overall US sports landscape 24/7, 365 days a year for the US to pack stadiums for an event like this.

Qatar will be cool too - from in front of a large, Hi-def TV sitting inside of my air conditioned home.

And its not just the US attendees. Its inexpensive for Europeans, and a popular destination for South Americans and Latin Americans as well. Most of which that have money to travel, speak English as a second language. This decision was purely political.

Your points are valid, but attendance aside, most other countries would appreciate hosting the WC more than the US. The fact that their country is hosting such a big time event means more to them than the average American.

FIFA is corrupt I am convinced of it, only plausible explanation. Russia is fine but Qatar over the U.S. or Australia? What a terrible choice.

Just as the Olympic committee went for the political "world unity," story so did FIFA. Donating the stadiums to needy countries, a stadium of friend ribbons suggesting world unity, bringing unity to a war-torn middle east, yadah yadah.

I just learned this year that Qatar exists. I just hope it helps the economy/fighting around there.

USA has become the "ISU" of the World....getting kicked in the nuts twice this year already.
