There's an old saying; "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining!" By putting on emphasis on player safety and fining defensive players like James Harrison for all these hits, while simultaneously pushing for an 18-game regular season schedule, that's EXACTLY what the NFL is doing. It redefines hypocrisy and insults my mine and the players intelligence. I have a very hard time feeling sorry for anybody in a professional sports strike/lockout. Excuse me if I just don't feel sympathy for a group of people that can't figure out how to split up hundreds of millions to billions of dollars without alienating their customers (the fans) in the process.
I do get what you're saying about ownership and league hypocrisy, and I do agree - the league wants to legislate hitting out of the game in the name of "player safety", yet at the same time they have no problems putting all the players in the line of fire for another two games because finances dictate it. On top of that, these guys are making hundreds of millions to billions annually, and yet they want to pay the players who destroy their bodies little by little (or, in some cases, lot by lot) every single day.
At the same time, how can I possibly feel any sympathy for the players? These guys get paid millions of dollars to play a kid's game, and they want the fans to believe they're the victims of greedy ownership. Okay, I get some of the complaints - I can understand the wanting of health care post-retirement, especially since they destroyed their bodies for the benefit and betterment of the League. But, as far as I'm concerned, about the most d-bag move a player can make is to start publicly crying about how ownership is trying to take food out of their childrens' mouths because ownership doesn't want to renegotiate a multiyear, multimillion dollar contract, or, when attempting to renew a contract, are a million dollars or a year or two off. Really? Players want to go there and expect fans to sympathize with them, especially with the way the economy is right now and 10% or so of Americans are out of work and are truly contemplating about how they're going to put food in their childrens' mouths and shelter them and keep them warm?
The bottom line is NOBODY realizes just how good they have it and EVERYBODY is out of touch with reality. They're all a bunch of greedy bastards that want to milk each other and the fans out of money, and after they have this strike/lockout and have alienated the fans, they expect the fans to line right back up and pretend nothing happened. And the problem is most of us will do that very thing.
But the bottom line is I can no longer pretend to side with anyone - not when all of them are greedy bastards who really don't give a rats arse about the fans outside of how much green we can provide them and have completely forgotten that without us fans they wouldn't even have a league.

As long as there is college football, I'm good.
