Cubs sign Carlos Pena

1 Yr/$10M per MLBTR.

Batted just .196 with 28 HR last year.

Not an awful signing and is just a one year deal.

He has terrible average, but he comes up with big hits when a team needs him.

this is one where you have some big negatives but some really good things. High strikeout rate and poor average. Huge power numbers, great defense and good walks rate, and his career average is much better than last years. really good bounce back canidate. i like the pick up. worst that can happen is he hits .200 with 30 HR's like last year and the cubs lineup stays mediocre at best.. or he could bounce back to his .240ish average with 40 hr, 100 rbi and the cubs become pretty competetive offensively

Maybe. Probably a 'prove yourself' kind of one-year deal.

The Pujols option can make a person go crazy with anticipation.
But I would hate to do that to the Cardinals. Wait, no I wouldn't.

Kirk Ferentz has a better chance of coaching teh ISU woman's basketball team than Albert Pujols has playing in Chicago.

Pujols will be in St. Louis or Angels uniform in 2012. Yankees have Texeria and Boston now has Gonzalez

I'm not sure he's really worth $10 mil but at least it is only a 1 year deal. Almost wonder if moving Colvin to 1B would have been a better move instead.

Its only 1 year and its not like the team we have this year is expected to make any big run. i am just glad they didn't do years like he wanted. hopefully Hendry and Co realize we have to get some of these huge contracts off the books so we can restart and rebuild the core of the team. Until Soriano's contract is off the books i am not expecting much.

1 year deal and he is gone. No way the cubs resign him after this year.

Colvin belongs in the OF anyways. Still need to find a way to trade Fukodome for a SP.

I like the trend. These long term big dollar contracts have not worked out very well. Of course that's part of the game, but on more marginal players, no sense in sticking your neck out too far. Makes more sense to be to go after youth and you can sign them cheaper.

This is a great move. Left handed power bat with great defense at a position of need on a one year deal....yes please.

Scott Boras did the same thing with Adrian Beltre last year and now he's in line to get another monster contract.

Is it within two years that we will have Soriano, Zambrano, Fukudome, and now Pena's contracts all off the books? Not that the Cubs will spend it wisely but that is a lot of money that is getting freed up.
