Hershel Walker to Make Comeback?
To hear him tell it, Walker can still give a boost to any NFL team willing to ignore the date on his birth certificate. He turns 49 on March 3.
"If I continue to stay in the shape I'm in now, I know I can play when I'm 50," Walker insisted yesterday during a teleconference to promote his Saturday bout with 27-year-old Scott Carson in a Strikeforce event in San Jose, Calif.
"Right now, if you asked me if I can play today, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind I can play football, that I can help a team out," said Walker, whose spent his final three NFL seasons primarily as a receiver and kick returner for the Giants and Cowboys. "I can 100 percent guarantee you I can help a football team out . . . Re: Hershel Walker to Make Comeback?
Vikings fans will tell you he couldn't play in the NFL at 27. "There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr -
Re: Hershel Walker to Make Comeback?
They don't have 3 roster spots for him...

This would change the focus in the NFL from concussions to broken hips...

Re: Hershel Walker to Make Comeback?
I'd say he's in pretty good shape for a 49-year old. He also claims to have been clocked at 4.38 in the 40 yard dash last Feb. The guy has been a world-class athlete his entire life, is known for being a fitness junkie, is a 5th degree blackbelt in tae kwan do, etc. Probably just a pipe dream at this point, but if someone gave him a shot, I think he'd take it and probably be an effective player, even at this age.

He needs the money. He watched Bret make $20M. Then Bret sold Wranglers. He could sell old men's briefs. or Cialis. Or Nike Seniors. Or Pearle Eye Vision.

If this is the case, Mr. Walker should enter a Master's Track Meet as this time (proportioned to 55-meters since that's the shortest race they run) would beat the current American record by nearly 1/2 second.
On a side note: Vikings management has already stated they won't trade more than five players to get Hershel this time.
Dean Wormer was wrong. Fat, drunk and stupid was a great way to go through college (all five years of it). -
Re: Hershel Walker to Make Comeback?
I would think only a crappy team that doesn't sell enough tickets would even consider this. At best it is a PR move.

He would be a good fit at Washington.

You can thank the Vikings for making the Cowboys dynasty of the 90's.

Re: Hershel Walker to Make Comeback?
Good work on the old Viking jokes everyone.
This stands no shot. Keeping in great shape and envisioning ones self as still being in the best shape of your life is a far cry from being able to actually do it. He can't. I remember Jim Palmer trying it for the O's and I think he was a couple year younger, in a game where pitchers actually can pitch in thier 40's and it was a sad sad failure.
Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving. -
Re: Hershel Walker to Make Comeback?
Heck, even George Blanda retired about that time and he was only a kicker/qb.
