Re: Puhols
I didn't think the Cardinals would let it get this close to his deadline. He's worth a lot of money.
I am sure glad the Twins got Mauer locked up last year.

Re: Puhols
If we dont sign this guy and he goes to another team....gonna be hard to watch baseball.

Re: Puhols
how are cards fans like gay men?

Re: Pujols
I think this situation is a win-win for the Cubs right now. Either he signs with them for some enormous number and half of their payroll is tied up to two players, leaving them with little flexibility down the road or he goes to another team and they become significantly worse.

Re: Pujols
better open that pocket book up before you let the cubs get to him! it really is a win win for basically anyteam in the NL central right now. either cards payroll is limited for quite a while with all the huge contracts, or they lose him and arent nearly as good. cubs are sitting the best tho of NL central teams b/c not only those two factors apply, but they are positioned to offer him top dollar

Why? Because they are still the Cubs. What is it now, 101 years?

The Cubs are going to drop a lot of salary at the end of the season and will have room to offer him a lot of jack.

The statement you quoted was not referring to the Cubs futility or their potential for success on the field within the division. He was referring to the fact that the Cubs will be in the best financial position to sign Pujols when he hits free agency. But hey, any chance a Cards fan can get to run down the Cubs fans for the 100+ year thing, right?

Re: Pujols
As an STL fan, I'm definitely conflicted about this. Yeah he's put up awesome numbers, but he's also getting injured more. In 5 years I bet he's spending more time on the DL than playing. So maybe they'd be better off putting that money towards a closer and middle infielders.
I'm also not sure who else would be interested in bidding .. Yankees or Red Sox? How many $20 mil first basemen do they need? Angels? They let Beltre and Crawford get away when they wouldn't pay up.
Maybe the Cubbies get him, and for a couple years Albert could kill the Cards from over there, but eventually I think that deal would be worse than A-Rod at Texas. We'll see.
