But if the Cubs are determined to strangle themselves with Albert, I'm all for it. thats not the point though. the cubs have $60 mil more per year to spend that anyone else in the division and if they spend $30 a year on albert, they are one of very few teams that can do that without killing their payroll. because if albert did sign with chicago, soriano and z's big contracts would be coming off in the early years of it and the cubs would still have a lot of money

If anyone signs him for what he wants, it will be to compete for the next five-six years. Plus you always have the chance that he will break the all time homerun record, which could potentially bring in some very nice publicity and $$$

Re: Cards Offer Pujols $200 Million over 8 Years
What I mean is that, if the cubs were to sign him, and they won a world series during his contract, that makes him worth the money right?

Re: Cards Offer Pujols $200 Million over 8 Years
If the deal offered is 25mm/year the diff between that and A-Rob's 27.5mm/year is taxes. Taxes are probably much higher in NY and Boston - A-Rob's net pay after tax may very well be lower than AP's after tax take.

Re: Cards Offer Pujols $200 Million over 8 Years
Can they make the contract front loaded, and have the last 3 to 4 years be cheap? They did that in hockey with Kovalchuks and Hossa's deals I think. This is baseball though, so I don't understand much. All I know is GO Cubs Go!

Re: Cards Offer Pujols $200 Million over 8 Years
With this and the whole thing of LaRussa talking in public, does anyone get the idea that this is the public pressure play from the Cardinals? The old idea of being the first one to speak and framing the argument against the other side idea seems to be in place here.
Cards speak about the huge amount of $ they'll give him, LaRussa talks about the union being the problem, and all of this amounts to public pressure on Pujols not to be the guy looking out only for himself.

Interesting theory, but I don't see TLR playing along. Say what you like about Tony, but he usually goes his own way (insert DUI joke here). If the Cards asked him to play this role, I think he'd tell them where to stick it.

Re: Cards Offer Pujols $200 Million over 8 Years
It sounds to me like LaRussa is trying to to take the pressure off Pujols by making it sound like it's the player's union that wants a drawn out negotiation process. It's not Albert's fault, the union is forcing him to hold out for every last penny. Personally, I think it's a pretty stupid argument on TLR's part but you can't really fault a manager for trying to deflect the heat off of one his players. And he's shown in the past that's he's pretty much willing to say anything to protect one of "his guys" regardless of how crazy it sounds (see McGwire, Mark).
