Cards Offer Pujols $200 Million over 8 Years
The St. Louis Cardinals have made a spirited last-ditch effort to sign Albert Pujols before his self-imposed noon deadline Wednesday, offering him an eight-year contract believed to be worth in excess of $200 million, people familiar with the talks told SI.com. However, several people connected to the negotiations believe the sides will not have an agreement in place before the deadline, setting the stage for free agency at year's end for the three-time NL MVP.
According to sources, the Cardinals' latest offer is short of $30 million per year. Pujols, 31, has been seeking a deal greater than the record 10-year, $275 million contract that Alex Rodrguez signed with the New York Yankees before the 2008 season.
Both sides have made proposals during talks that have stretched over months, but in recent days no one was expressing great hope for a quick resolution. Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...#ixzz1E8KqnNJd -

Fat Albert isn't going to take $20 mill/year. Hello free agency!

I say let him go. He's a great player, but he's not a spring chicken anymore.

I think its a good offer from St Louis, and this is where you will see exactly how loyal AP is to St. Louis...

Re: Cards Offer Pujols $200 Million over 8 Years
I've been thinking this whole time that the Cards were being dumb by not giving Albert what he wants. Now I'm starting to think Albert is getting greedy. I expect that out of ARod, but not Pujols. I know he's worth a lot of money but nobody is worth that much.

I think its a fair offer, but any more is rediculous.....but there is always a dumber owner out there!
Remember that stressed spelled backwards is desserts!

A 4 or 5 year contract at that age is appropriate, not a longer one.

He's definitely worth that now but not in five or six years, let alone ten. I always thought Albert was a little more humble than that I guess.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, though. He is a professional athlete, after all.

I'd be nervous if the Cubs were giving him that kind of offer ($ + years). It's more than fair to Pujols. If he turns it down and ends up going elsewhere after the season, I could see a Lebron-like backlash against him. There's no way he's getting significantly more than that anywhere else.

It's about time that Bud Selig and his buddies start "collusion" again but this time for the this type of reason. These salaries are really, really becoming insane.

Re: Cards Offer Pujols $200 Million over 8 Years
I would give Albert 8 at $27.5 M. That is an albatross in the last 2-3 years (at least), but he's been a bargain since the first day he stepped on the field.
