Tonight will be Tony LaRusa's 5000th game managed

He first started managing for the ChiSox back in 1979. This is pretty incredible considering he'll only be the second person to do it.

DON"T TURN THIS INTO A CARDS VS CUBS THREAD! (you know who you are).

In recognition of such a special achievement, Bud Selig has given LaRussa a special dispension to expand his roster for one day so he can make 46 pitching changes in honor of his overwhelming impact on the game of baseball.

I heard he will bat his pitcher lead-off. Brian Wilson said Tony could touch his beard too.

It's impressive. The man has had a legendary career, and he deserves every single accolade that he gets.

Good article from the Post Dispatch this morning. Hey, only 2700+ more to go and he'll catch Connie Mack!

La Russa is set to manage his 5,000th game

Some year's back I took my dad then in his late 70s, and now past, to Kreis's on Lindbergh in STL for their famous prime-rib. Tony, Whitey and Stan were at a table near the bar. My dad got to meet and talk with all 3, listened to Stan play his harmonica and talked about it 'til the day he died. I remember him telling me that night about how they would get the baseball scores up to the soldiers on the front lines in Europe during WWII. About the only time he ever talked about the war. Tony is legendary and I commend Erik for recognizing it. When I shook Ernie Banks hand at Wrigley a few years back I almost pee'd me pants with excitement. Another classy guy.

I'll bet my Tony La Russa Iowa Oaks card is worth at least 2 bucks!

I was his batboy for the Iowa Oaks, 2/3 of the way through the '79 season.
    Makes me feel incredibly old!

See...this is proof that you have some(little) class.
    Nice post.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.
