I don't know if we can call Cuban a great owner. Who knows how many rings they would have had he kept Steve Nash around.

None, they would have been killed defensively.

I thought that Cuban bringing in Donald Carter for the trophy celebration was extremely classy.

He'll do something special for his guys. Probably rings, too.

Meh, I have a feeling they would have come across a championship at some point. Besides that, Jason Kidd isn't that good.

Jason Kidd is light years ahead of Nash defensively. He guarded Kobe, Westbrook, LeBron and even Durant for stretches this year in the playoffs. His ability to guard bigger guys allowed Barea to get a lot of playing time, his defense played a huge role in the Mavs winning the title. With Nash and Dirk you would have two below average defenders on the court at crunch time, it's hard to win that way. Both the Mavs and the Suns tried to outscore teams for years, and while they were good squads, they were never able to win a title.

The story went that Nash talked to him and must have told him what Phoenix was offering and Cuban told him to go because the money was too good.

Kidd has always been/will be a better player than Nash. Nash is a good player, but Kidd is a better leader that plays defense.

You can take Steve Nash and have points/assists and lose. I will take Jason Kidd and win. I don't know if there is a player/owner in the league that would rather have Nash in his prime than Kidd.

Why couldn't you pick up another defender? I'm not saying Nash was better in his prime than Kidd, but Kidd isn't in his prime now. He's still a good player and yes, a better defender but he's also has more than Nash did. He has Jason Terry, Marion, and Chandler to compliment. I will say I don't remember the Mavs roster that well from the Nash days but I don't think he had that many guys around. He certainly didn't have a Tyson Chandler type player.

I'm not saying Cuban got rid of him, but he didn't keep him.

As noted earlier, Kidd didn't win anything in his prime. Of course, he was on some bad teams.

Jason Kidd is an all around player. He rebounds well for a guard and he has been an all nba defender 8 times. He's much better than Steve Nash

Kidd won the eastern conference finals where his best player was Keith Van Horn. Steve Nash can't hold Jason Kidd's jock

You could pick up a better defender, but you're still going to have to hide two poor defenders in Dirk or Nash, not saying it's impossible but it would be tough to win a title that way.

When Nash was on the Mavs they had Dirk, Antawn Jamison, Antoine Walker, Mike Finley, Josh Howard. They played a lot of small ball and tried to outscore teams. Nash went to the perfect situation for him, won a couple of MVPs and had a lot of bad luck in the playoffs. The Mavs got better in each of the three years after Nash left so it's hard to say it didn't work out well for both of them. I would love to have watched Dirk and Nash keep playing together, but I think going their separate ways worked out well for both of them.

The East was terrible when Kidd got the Nets to the Finals, the Suns had some all time bad luck in the playoffs. I think they win the title in '07 if it's not for the suspensions that resulted from Horry knocking Nash into the scoring table. I think they had a good shot at winning the '05 title as well if Joe Johnson doesn't break his face against the Mavs in the second round.
