All or nothing players have value when they provide the 'all' enough times. Carlos Pena does. I'll trade you Adam Dunn for him.

Adam Dunn is the player I most relate Pena to. Even if Dunn strikes out more, they're both roughly the same player. Low batting average, all-or-nothing power. I don't want either one.

Byrd, Ramirez, Dempster, and Soto all could net some decent talent in a trade and much like Fukudome you know that Grawbow and Pena likely will not be back so why not get anything you can for them? Hendry has to go, he's had more than enough time and money to build a contender and it hasn't happened!
Ramirez wouldn't waive the no-trade clause in his contract. But, they could have moved several of the others.

He actually indicated a willingness to waive it for the right deal a couple of days ago.
Still, I'm glad we kept him. He's won me over again lately.

Wait till the weather gets colder again and his hitting goes south for the winter and get back to us. For a guy making $14.6 mil I would hope for a little more consistency throughout the year for the guy that hits #3. I'm OK with bringing him back next year at a salary closer to $10 mil for no more than 2 years but he's not worth what he is making now. Cubs have to get out of some of these big contracts and start spending more wisely. The status quo is why they are so terrible this year, Hendry needs to go because he keeps expecting guys like Soriano, Ramirez, and Zambrano will be able to one day actually live up to their big contracts. Granted they are tough to move but he's the one that put the club in this situation and ultimately needs to be held responsible for it now.
Re: Trades coming fast and furious at the deadline.
The good news is that most of these guys will clear waivers easily so the deadline wasn't a big deal to the Cubs.
The bad news is that they're still not good contracts to try and sell.

Ramirez is the wild card. For fans (like me) that he's swayed back to supporting him, we're right there to be played like fools with next year's cold start. So there's still trouble.
I think it's safe to assume that the other two will never live up to those deals. Zambrano is the case study of falling off after signing the big contract. I don't understand how an baseball player can get the huge guaranteed contracts anymore with the massive volume of players who magically tail off after signing the big deal and turn it on during a contract year.

You can thank your local Player's Association for that. It's as strong of a union as I can think of.

The MLB PA is definitily strong and responsible for a lot of the good perks in player contracts (10 & 5 rule for example), but the responsibility for huge contracts for stars like Soriano and Zambrano that don't pan out as hoped sits squarely in the GM's corner.
Re: Trades coming fast and furious at the deadline.
Isn't a contract by definition, a guarantee? I don't see how the NFL can get away with cutting people in the middle of contracts, especially when an injury happens.

Agreed. Regardless of the fact that the PA has done some great work for the players, nobody is holding a gun to these GM's heads to sign Soriano for $20 mil until he's 60 (for example.)

Right. At some point, the GMs/owners are actually signing off on these crazy deals. They're responsible for their own failures there.

Ramirez should not be included in this group. He has been worth every penny of his contract and has been incredibly consistent outside of the first half of last season.
