I like the hire. Mike was a good in-game manager, and his battery mates had high praise. I like catchers as managers. The catcher's perspective equates well to managing.
Not sure Francona would have come. Too risky to follow "The Man." (no pun intended). Not sure Oquendo was a good fit, although I love the Irish shortstop. I didn't want Ryno, and I didn't see Little Joe as a good fit either.
First reaction was, huh? More i think about it, the more i like the move. He has very good relationship with Molina and AP. has a good chance of keeping the staff in tact. I think AP comes back and we are talking about Back to Back championships!!!!
Was talking with my father-in-law this weekend who is a huge Cards fan, and I said this would be the best guy for the job. Listen to him talk. He knows baseball, he knows the organization and he knows what he's doing. He'll be successful.
I like it. He's a known quantity as a person to almost all involved and was one of the best in game catchers I've ever seen. I'm confident he's got the brains for it and he knows how the clubhouse works. He'll take some lumps along the way, but it's a good combination of a short term hire the allows for continuity and a long term guy that could spend many years on the bench.
I do feel for Oquendo. He's paid his dues and deserves a shot. Obviously management/ownership saw what they wanted in MM.
