Pujols nor Fielder can assist in another 200 runs each year to make them better. They can however take the money a couple solid starters could command. The Cubs were right in the middle of the majors in hitting. They were in the bottom 1/4 in pitching. They don't get quality starts. Team ERA is bad. They took the title in walks allowed by forever over 2nd place, and their pitchers got hit hard. I fail to see how Pujols or Fielder fixes the above.
And why Matt Garza is apparently on the market is beyond me.
You are dead on that pitching is the Cubs biggest issue. But that shouldn't stop them from improving their lineup either. They have plenty of money and can address both.

you dont get why garza is on the market? think about it. look at free agency options for pitchers.. teams are going to be desperate for top end starting pitching. the cubs arent going to contend this year and with garza only having 2 years left hes not as valuable to the cubs as he is to teams ready to win now, you can trade him for 4-5 prospects and at least 2 of them will have to be ML-ready guys from what im hearing. if you can swing a deal with say the yanks for montero and banuelos or betances then a couple other prospects you have to do that. its a no brainer. or with the rangers for a kid like mitch moreland and martin perez then 2-3 others. you have to do that because this is about rebuilding the farm. building the team from within

The pursuit of free agent sluggers Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols is heating up.
The Seattle Mariners have expressed interest in Fielder and the Chicago Cubs have reached out to Pujols.
"There's no question we could use a big bat in the middle of our lineup, but where is your limitation and threshold?" Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik asked. "We'll go down that road and experiment and see where it ends up, but until things get more definitive, we'll just have to wait and see."
The Pujols sweepstakes made its way to Wrigley Field. General manager Theo Epstein called Pujols' representatives to express their interest in the slugger, according to ESPN. Discussions between Pujols' agent Dan Lozano and the Cubs are in the early stages.
The Marlins offered Pujols a contract earlier this month.
The Cubs have also shown interest in Fielder. The first baseman has ties with new manager Dale Sveum. Sveum was a Milwaukee Brewers coach from 2006 to 2011.
I agree that the cubs are only driving up the price of Fielder and Pujols. Theo's 1st priority is building the cubs pitching depth throughout the organization whether it be through free agency, trade, or the draft.
