He will probably have to buy a smaller island now. His island real estate agent might not be happy about this.

No they didn't. Plus they wouldn't give him the no trade clause he wanted.

Albert took the money and I have no problem with it. I had no interest in the Cards commiting that kind of money for that long, and apparently Albert thought he needed the huge payday to legitimize his place in the game. He owes the Cards nothing, and the Cards don't need to make up for a "cheap" contract that he signed in the past. The Cards were getting by on the low side by superstar standards, but $16mil/ is hardly minimum wage. He was also treated well by the media and absolutely revered by the fan base. I doubt he'll get that kind of treatment in Anaheim, where he goes from hero to hired gun.

By most accounts, the highest the Cards got in this round of negotiations was somewhere north of $200mil and that was a huge reach in most fans' eyes. He felt the extra $50mil was more important than his legacy as one of the 2 greatest Cardinals of all time and a statue outside of Busch Stadium. That's his decision and only he will ever be able to say for sure if it was the right one.

You don't root for the players, you root for the uniform. I learned that lesson a long time ago.

The Marlins offered $30 million less and wouldn't give him the no-trade clause.

I've read that the Cards offered $220 million. That was the last offer, it seems.

Pujols received ten years and $254MM from the Angels, but Bob Nightengale of USA Today says the Marlins offered ten years and $275MM. That would have tied Alex Rodriguez for the largest contract guarantee in baseball history. Nightengale says that with incentives and Florida's lack of a state income tax, the deal could have been worth nearly $300MM.

My mistake. I hadn't seen that contract offer from the fish. I'm suprised AP didn't take that, no trade clause or not. That's a ton of cash, and South Beach does not suck as far as places to hang out.

I don't care much about Pujols or anything else related to baseball, but this = terrible analogy.

For starters, I don't already make enough money for me, my kids, their kids, their kids, & their kids to be set financially. I'm not a public role model. I haven't publicly declared I'm committed to my company/city...

Again, it doesn't bother me one bit he left, but making this argument is ignorant.. Apples to oranges.

Pujols 5 is a good restaurant. I'd recommend it. Ozzie's restaurant SUCKS.

Not sure what all the Cardinal fans are upset about. Give him a 10 year contract now for a team that doesn't have a DH, and he turns in Alfonso Soriano in 5 years. Huge contract, struggles defensively, and can't be moved.
