We needed a third baseman as soon as the season was over. It was clear Ramirez wasn't going to be re-signed, and the Cubs made no effort to retain him. The Cubs recently got Ian Stewart in a trade with the Rockies to play third.

Cubs traded Colvin to Rockies for Ian Stewart who is coming off of an injury and is expected to be the 100-120 game starter at 3rd base for the Cubs

I think they're still interested in retaining Pena though.....

Ramirez is great in driving in runs when they don't matter.

It was of course expected that Aramis would sign with another team, but it's still hard to take - he has been my favorite Cubs player since his acquisition in '03.

As it sounded, they're more serious about retaining Pena than Ramirez, doesn't mean it'll happen.
