Cubs and Reds in Trade Talks

The Reds, continuing their search for bullpen help, are talking to the Cubs about a trade for left-hander Sean Marshall, according to major league sources.
The Cubs are targeting left-hander Travis Wood, a pitcher who intrigued team president Theo Epstein last season when Epstein was GM of the Red Sox, sources say.
It is not known whether other players might also be part of the deal.
Marshall, 29, has been one of the game’s top left-handed relievers the past two seasons. He will earn $3.1 million in 2012, then become eligible for free agency.
Wood, 24, endured two minor league demotions last season, finishing 6-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 22 games, including 18 starts, with the Reds. He is expendable in part because of the Reds’ recent acquisition of Mat Latos from the Padres.

I hate this as a Reds fan. Sure, Marshall is a great reliever, but Wood has good upside and is under club control for 5 years.

    And yet, here you are.
But with Albert gone, you're probably looking for a new team. It's understandable.

Albert was too expensive for STL. We will move on and win with the also ran players.

Yet you are still in an thread about the Cubs and Reds.

Ehh, I'm ok with it. I love what Wood could be and Marshal is the one solid piece in our pen, but the Cubs need to get talent and shed contracts in a bad way. This is starting to take care of the former.

Now if we could trade away all most (not Castro or Barney) our position players for Joey Votto...

This is a terrible trade for the Reds. If they knew Marshall would be under contract with them for more than 1 year, I could see the logic. But just when they are getting some good young talent back in the system, they traded away a lot already for Latos.

The more I think about it, the more I like this trade because it represents long term thinking. Going to miss Marshall, but he's probably gone in another year anyway. This way we trade him and get some good young players in return.

I'm tired of signing older guys for big dollars and then they fall apart.

I agree. I really hate losing Marshall, but he's only a year from free agency anyway. If the price isn't too high, the Cubs could even try to sign him next offseason.

Re: Cubs and Reds in Trade Talks

Travis Wood is a great buy-low for the Cubs. Holding off judgement until we learn who the two prospects coming with Wood are. Marshall may only be under contract for one year for the reds, but him and Venters are pretty much 1A and 1B as far as the best lefty relievers in baseball go.

Still though, I like picking up Wood. High upside, team control for 5 years and at the very least can hold down the 4th or 5th rotation spot.

Re: Cubs and Reds in Trade Talks

Its a good trade for both teams. The Cubs are obviously going into a rebuilding mode and the Reds see this as there chance to get to playoffs.
rebeca needs to worry about his own crumbling team and the Reds.
Shehe wont though because shehe is a vindictive little puke that should actually
be a hok fan by the way he acts and talks.
I hope I run into shehim in NYC.
I'll strip down, take my Cubs boxers off,and stick them over shehis head.

Quit hijacking every thread with your Cardinal stuff.

In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I think it's a win for the Cubs not even including the 2 minor league players (who should end up being two very low level prospects). Travis Wood is a good young pitcher and showed flashes of brilliance multiple times. Had a perfect game into the 9th against the Phillies.
