    Cubs Add Maholm

    Paul Maholm will go down as the first Cub in history to announce his signing on Twitter.

    The Cubs signed the former     Pirates left-hander on Monday, according to the pitcher's Twitter account, and the team confirmed the news Tuesday.

    "I hope to get to continue some things when I visit during the year and start some great things as I start my Cubs career," Maholm tweeted in a message to Pirates fans.

    He then added in another tweet he was looking forward to the Cubs Convention.

    A Cubs source said Maholm got a one-year deal worth $4.25 million with a $6.5 million option for 2013 and $500,000 buyout.

    The signing of Maholm, 29, adds to the Cubs' rotation depth and provides insurance in case     Matt Garza is traded.

    good middle of rotation addition and got him cheaper than i thought he could find on the market. is coming off a shoulder injury so that may have scared some teams off. i think this makes it all the more inevitable that Garza is dealt though. if Garza does end up going to Detroit and Jacob Turner comes to chicago, i'd be pretty happy about that!

    All these one year guys will be trade bait for prospects at the deadline. Which is fine with me, if you don't have assets that yield for the future you have to manufacture them.

    Great deal for the Cubs. I'd much rather have this deal than the Bruce Chen deal or the Chris Capuano deal.
