I also don't appreciate having my posts deleted that are in no way inappropriate; just because my opinion conflicts with one of the mods.

    Re: Kerry Wood Retiring Today

There is no denial that Wood never lived up to expectations and most of that was due to injury problems. Early in his career and even for a stretch as a reliever he was pretty good though (again when he was healthy.) I don't think anyone here is saying he is a hall of famer but with Cubs fans he will do down as one of the more popular players during the time he played.

He has 1 of only 5 games in MLB history with 20 or more strikeouts which is more rare than a perfect game (21 of them.) For that he'll be remembered for pitching one of the most dominating games in MLB history and the Astro's team he did it against was a pretty good hitting team at the time (Bagwell, Biggio, and Bell.) We'll always wonder "what if" had he stayed healthy and Cubs fans will also resent Jim Riggleman and Dusty Baker for using him heavily early in his career which likely contributed to his arm issues. I think I saw something where in his rookie season he pitched about a handful of games where his pitch count was 120 or more which is just careless use of a rookie. If anything he and Prior's arm issues from over-usage likely saved several other young pitchers from going through the same thing once pitch counts and innings logged became a bigger issue than it was in the past.
    Go Cubs Go!

Thats the standard protocol when an opposing pitcher hits your teammate in the face. Nothing to be ashamed of.

It's not protocol to aim high when hitting someone back on the other team. That's just busch league. Samardzija was clearly not trying to hit Konerko.

Pretty pathetic that this thread turned from a tribute to a retiring player to Cards/Sox/whatever fans trying to rail on the guy. Many Cubs fans adore Kerry, and the way he went out was awesome and frankly one of the more touching moments in recent team history that I can remember.

Give it a rest and find something more worthwhile to do. Now's not the time to be a ***** and throw dirt at him.

It was neat. I think the way other fans have reacted is because it seems the amount of attention he received was quite disproportionate to his career performance.

Clones21 with the accurate insight! From overrating their manager, to thinking of themselves as the best fan base ever, and just plain arrogance in general, they are a lot like Hawk fans!

Someone make a note of this for the CF archives, it will likely never happen again.
