Yes, I'm lazy because I'm not going to read this whole thread, so apologies if this has all already been said.
I don't really care if he doped or not. I would give it a 95% chance that he was doping (maybe higher), but who cares? They strip his title and give it to the guy who got second and was probably also doping? What does that accomplish? He was a great cyclist in a time when it is generally accepted that there was widespread doping in cycling. That's it.
As far as his non-cycling activities, I think the fundraising and cancer awareness activities that he's done are great and I applaud him for that. But it has absolutely nothing to do with whether he was doping. Nor do I care whether he's an a-hole or not. I'm not in a position to judge him because I only see a very small part of his life.
Actually I'm not. I know baseball has a real problem and I'm sure the Cardinals are no different. I guess if the players that don't use are okay protecting those that do through the CBA then I won't worry too much about it. I know the players aren't going to snitch on each other even if it means facing a guy you know or suspect. Why? Because they're all getting rich playing a game. Ask any player off the record, and Kemp even insinuated as much at the All Star Game, what they thought of Melky's year before he got caught and most would roll their eyes. Oh well I guess.
Big George has nothing to gain by testifying - "About two years ago, I was approached by US Federal investigators, and more recently by USADA, and asked to tell of my personal experience in these matters. I would have been much more comfortable talking only about myself, but understood that I was obligated to tell the truth about everything I knew. So that is what I did."
"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr
Always thought he was a doper - even absent proof.
What still remains is he was a doper in an entire sport of dopers and while his doping may have been better than the average doper, to win it 7 in a row ON a level albeit doped playing field is a testicle to his strength and remarkable physical and mental abilities.
Did you see what I did with the "testicle" thing back there? That's just funny...
