Re: MNf - WTF
I have to agree with some of the earlier posters about the ESPN angle. The one thing I find harder to watch than the officials themselves is the ESPN announcers going on and on about how awful the replacements are. That is making the games painful to watch for me. Yeah, there are some issues with the replacement refs, but they act like there weren't officiating controversies with the regular guys.
Complaining about the pass interference on the hail mary is a perfect example. Sure, it was a foul, but this is one of those classic situations where officials let them play. Just like a buzzer beating shot at the end of a bball game, you basically have to murder a guy to get a foul called.
The refs are sucking both ways, so I guess I don't see it destroying the game. The Packers had 60 minutes to win that game without letting it come down to Seattle having a chance to throw the game winner into the endzone. They let it get to the point where they didn't have complete control over the outcome. No different than a kicker missing a game winning FG. Sure, that guy blew the final shot, but the whole team had a part in getting there.
Also, I hate the Packers. :)

Re: MNf - WTF
I thought it was funny that Russell Wilson called the wrong play in the huddle. He also ran around in the backfield like sandlot eluding Clay Mathews. For the play, he only had two receivers in the end zone and six defenders. How many Packers does it take to stop the Golden Tator? More than six. You can surround him, you can sit on him, you can mob him, but you can never have enough defenders.
Russell in the huddle:
"Okay guys, this is it. Time to make the champions suck hindy. Tate and Juke, I want you to go the left corner of the EZ. Juke, you shield the refs from seeing anything. Tate, plan to strip the ball. Shove the defenders if they are small. I will throw them the lollapalooza pass after three of you tackle Clay Goldilocks Mathews. Okay, break."

Maybe neither team deserved to win. Call it a tie, Roger.

Re: MNf - WTF
Not sure why replay can't be used on a play like that even at the end of the game. The rule needs to change whether you have replacement officials or not. The ref that called the touchdown before he put up his arms signaling a TD had looked at the other official who started to move his arms, then the official who called the TD raised his arms. They use replay all the time during the game to reverse missed calls by the refs, so why wouldn't they use it at the most crucial time of the game. "Rule 8 section 1 article 3 If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control" Tate never had any possession other than a hand on the ball that Jennings clearly caught and held in his possession. Tate even moved his hand off it and put it back on it. -

Re: MNf - WTF
I've been wondering if the league could show us any other jumpballs like this that were ruled simultaneous possession. Surely with all the great footage that Steve Sabol compiled over the years they would be able to demonstrate how the regular refs would have called this the same way....

It appears that the flub/oversight/travesty/minor oversight did not speed upo negotiations to the extent of having as solution even with a mediator. Owners want part time refs. Owners won't budge as latest talks fail to produce deal, source says - ESPN Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

Add to that the fact that the league knows that when they finally do come to an agreement with the refs, this whole fiasco with the replacements will be forgotten in a matter of a couple of weeks. Fans have very short memories, and I think the owners are under far less pressure as a result of this game, than the sports media would have you believe.
