No more kickoffs in the NFL?
Didn't see a thread about this yet. Looks like Goodell might get rid of kickoffs. Roger Goodell floats idea to end kickoffs, report says - ESPN
I figure that kickoffs are going to be done away with eventually but this new rule they want to put in sounds really dumb.
Goodell and McKay discussed an idea brought up by Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano in which a team, instead of kicking off, would get the ball at its own 30-yard line in a fourth-and-15 situation. The team then would punt the ball away or, to replace an onside kick, could go for it and, if they failed to get a first down, the opposing squad would start with great field position.

Re: No more kickoffs in the NFL?
How about if they fail to convert the 4th and 15 at the 30, they would have to move back to the 10 and try to convert a 4th and 35?
Would you be on board then?

Re: No more kickoffs in the NFL?
Because punts are soooooo much safer then kickoffs. Plus this would totally change late game situations where you are down by multiple scores. Score a TD or a FG, the you essentially get the ball. Converting on a 4th and 15 would be much easier then getting the onside kick.

Re: No more kickoffs in the NFL?
This is really stupid..and would favor teams like West Virginia or MAC teams. They could just go for it every time. They're a lot more likely to pick up a 4th and 15 than an onside kick..and if they don't get it...well their defense was probably going to give up points anyway.
edit: if added to college football. Pro football doesn't have any defenses that bad.

Re: No more kickoffs in the NFL?
Well, it's good to see the NFL is doing it's part to help me get more done on Sundays during the fall. Just take off the pads, give em flags and call it a day.
Seriously, no kick-offs? Wow.

Would you be on board then? Um, no? I think the other team should just get the ball on the 20. Maybe still allow onside kicks for teams at the end of the game.

This would be a really really bad rule for college football.

My real thoughts on it are this:
Football is a great sport. Stop ******* with it!

Re: No more kickoffs in the NFL?
That is incredibly stupid. If you are going to do something like this, which I don't like at all, just start the drives at the 20/25/30 and if you want to onside kick it...... just let them onside kick it. If the kicking team doesn't recover, just give the ball to the receiving team at the spot of the recovery or the 50 yard line, whichever is more advantageous to the receiving team. That would remove any "fake" onside kicks.
Also, punts are much safer than kickoffs.
"He is the toughest I have ever been around, physically and mentally," Burnham said. "You can beat him down but you’re not going to beat him out. He’s got the mindset of, ‘If you’re going to get me out of this game, you’re going to have to kill me.’ That’s about where he is."

Re: No more kickoffs in the NFL?
Get rid of kickoffs and then change the name of the game to gridiron. Thats what the Aussies call it already. Sometimes things make too much sense. "Football" is no longer.
When that Neb player was penalized for making that awesomely clean block it sealed the deal for me. It is no longer football. There is a reason you are taught to keep your head on a swivel.

Re: No more kickoffs in the NFL?
Is it just me or is this just a huge over reaction. The liability is on the owners and the League for past players if they didn't disclose the risks they knew about.
At this time we know the risk, can't the current players just sign a waiver saying they will accept the risks and we can have football as it is now? Let the individuals decide if they want to play, stop fundamentally changing the game.
Or am I missing something?

Re: No more kickoffs in the NFL?
What percent of kickoffs in the NFL get returned after they moved it up to the 35 anyways? Feels like about 2%
