Megatron's has gotten the Lions to 4 wins.
A big part of the "value" in the Most Valuable Player award can be measured in wins. That's why Johnson ought to be considered for the Player of the Year award, but not MVP, because despite his record, it hasn't translated into team success.
And for the record, if AP breaks the record, but the Vikings lose out, he likely won't be in contention for the MVP either.
It's also really tough for a WR to get the MVP imho, simply because they don't touch the ball enough. For example, in the Lions 4 wins this year, Johnson touched the ball on a total of 22 plays. That's just not enough touches. A QB or RB has far more opportunities to impact a game, and therefore add value to the team.
Lawrence Taylor won the NFL MVP in 1986.
Last time the NFL MVP was won by a player whose team didn't make the playoffs was OJ Simpson in 1973.
The more you know.
Calvin Johnson may break 2000 yds receiving, which is amazing, but he's not MVP or MOP. Sucks for him that he plays for Detroit.
This is the most pass happy the NFL has ever been. If AP breaks the all time rushing record in this era it is seriously ridiculous. This year is the lowest rushes per game in NFL history.
congrats calvin!! you have such a great season that you deserve january off!!!
Hoping he can get to 2000. At least he is one good thing in this terrible season.
Megatron is awesome. Its to bad the Lions cant get it together.
I am not sure Manning deserves the MVP over AP. Manning has a great year and he has for sure helped the Broncos but the Broncos made the playoffs last year. The defense was pretty good last year and is pretty good this year. The Vikings on the other hand suck without AP. He has single handily taken that team to the playoffs.
It will be a pretty amazing year if new records are set in both yards by a receiver and yards by a runner.
As far as AP getting the MVP......I think he has a very good chance of that if the Vikings make the playoff, because he will be the main reason they make it. I think he is also getting a lot of attention because of the fact he is doing this the season after having major knee surgery. If nothing else, hands down he has the Comeback Player of the Year award.
IMO, AP should get the nod for MVP based on 2 reasons: 1) He did this following major knee surgery, and 2) Everyone knew the Vikings passing game was mediocre at best so they keyed on the run game and still couldn't stop him. It will be a tight race between he and Manning. I know Manning came back from neck surgery and I'm not downplaying his accomplishment. But he did not have a stellar season like AP did.
It is amazing that the two leading MVP candidates had major injuries during 2011.
Nice to show Calvin give the ball to his dad, cool moment.
