I don't follow the NHL as closely as some other sports because I don't really have a favorite team. But yeah, definitely watching a few games in person helps you learn how to watch it on TV, because for whatever reason it's easier to follow in person.

Re: nhl lockout over
You're right, less bandwagon fans is probably more accurate. And it also seems that way sometimes because passionate NHL fans tend to be a little less accepting of casual fans that is the case in some other sports. those stinkhead ruined my surprise Christmas gift to my husband with their lockout
I do rag on him for being a hockey fan, but I have to say it beats the **** out of watching baseball or golf. Those sports=naptime. Hockey does get better as you learn more and have someone to explain what the heck is going on.

I can't speak for hockey as a whole, but this definitely isn't true in the DC area; this place is chock full of bandwagon Capitols fans. A lot of that is probably due to DC's other pro sports teams being atrocious for the past 5 years, though.

Re: nhl lockout over
I would agree with this. At least to the extent that its an even bigger problem for the casual fan. But as someone who grew up playing hockey, there is a bigger difference for me between going to a game and watching it on TV than in other sports (particularly football where watching on TV is not that far behind going to the game for me). haha, I knew a few people would vehemently disagree but I stand by it. I have tried and tried to watch baseball and I just can't learn to care. It seems like it just takes so long for anything to happen.

haha, yes! And I'm a big NASCAR fan, you think it'd be right up my alley! It's so bad that I'm actually glad the Cubs have (really) sucked the last few years so my husband doesn't watch anymore.
