He's shown that he's prone to miss games, is kind of a head case, and is entering the last year of a contract. Those things devalue him enormously. Minnesota is not in a position of power when it comes to trading him. They can either deal him this year or risk getting nothing for him when he leaves for free agency, next year.

To be honest, I think a team pulls the trigger and offers a deal better than a 2nd and a 4th. I don't think a first will come, but I do think Spielman might get a more creative deal when it comes to compensation. There is a small shot a 1st could come, but it would be a late first most likely. He was taken with the 22nd pick IIRC, and he has proven to be even better than that when on the field. His headaches are not good, but it is a sellers market when it comes to a stud like Harvin. Harvin would be an upgrade at the slot for every single team except maybe the Patriots, and he is the most versatile player in the NFL.
I don't think the Vikings let go of him for less than premium price. Hell, Brandon Marshall went for two 2nds. I think a team would pay that for Harvin at least.

For those Vikings fans who are excited at this prospect, Eric Perkins on the radio this morning was disdainful of the report. He wouldn't say the talking head's name but refered to him as "The Coffee Drinker" and said there was a reason that he was the only one reporting this and no one else could come up with a whisper to back his claim up. He seemed to think that a trade was not in the offing.
I have no opinion in the matter.

Re: Vikings to trade Harvin?
I really don't see the Vikes dealing him, they can rework his contract to make him happy and sign him long term. However, if someone is willing to offer up a 1st round pick or maybe two 2nd rounders, things could get interesting.

The problem for the Vikings is, Percy has been rumored to be unhappy in Minnesota, and he won't resign... That is just rumors and reports though.

That isn't really an issue other than teams thinking they might just be able to get him as a FA next year. He has another year on his contract, and if it gets to the point that his trade value is that low the Vikings will just resign him. He won't sit out a full year. That is much much much less likely than the Vikings just letting him walk. Percy Harvin story off and running - NFC North Blog - ESPN We're off and I'm not sure there is any turning back now. The "Percy Harvin on the trade block" story is in full swing in NFL media circles and, barring a total denial from theMinnesota Vikings, figures to remain in the headlines for the foreseeable future. (Actually, in the world of sports trade talk, even a total denial wouldn't suffice. We all know how these things work.) We spelled out last week the Vikings' complicated situation with Harvin, a 24-year-old playmaker whose off-field behavior has ranged from eccentric to unruly in four years with the team. He is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which means now is probably the time for the Vikings to make their Big Decision on his future. Coach Leslie Frazier and general manager Rick Spielman both stopped short last week of committing to having Harvin on their team in 2013. A WCCO-Ch. 4 report over the weekendadded fuel to speculation that the Vikings will try to trade him, and on Monday our friends at ESPN Insider had already posted a list of possible suitors . (The New England Patriotsand San Francisco 49ers make a lot of sense.) The post, penned by Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus, notes that transcendent players such as Harvin are rarely traded at this point in their careers. What we've heard to this point might all go down as high-level contract leveraging against a player who is seeking to be among the NFL's highest-paid receivers. Indeed, as ESPN's Adam Schefter says in the video, the Vikings are already short on receivers and would be further weakened if they traded away their best one. If the Vikings can't find a compromise in negotiations with Harvin, what could they get in return? In the ESPN Insider piece, Monson discussed the possibility of a second-round draft pick, the price for a player considered damaged goods. I agree with Monson's assessment on that price; it would be the steal of the decade in the NFL. If the Vikings take less than a first-round pick for him, we could only conclude that their off-field concerns are deeper than currently contemplated.
Says Harvin for a 2nd rounder would be the "steal of the decade" for the team getting Harvin. Good article. "He is the toughest I have ever been around, physically and mentally," Burnham said. Re: Vikings to trade Harvin?
This isn't the rumor I wanted to hear, but at the same time, its no surprise to me. I think the Vikes need to take a good long look at what they would want for him. If they go the trade route for a new WR, they need to take a long, hard look at who's out there. Harvin hasn't exactly been healthy, neither was Sid Rice, and we all know what happened with Mr. Williamson. WR hasn't been a strong point for us in quite some time.

Wouldn't they be able to franchise tag him after next season? That would give them the ability to force him to play out his existing deal and then tag him and try to work out a long term deal or see what they could get in a trade.
It seems crazy to me to trade away a developing QB's best passing game weapon for 75 cents on the dollar when the team has all the leverage.

Re: Vikings to trade Harvin?
Percy Harvin is indeed a great talent....but if I am an opposing GM...I wouldnt give up anything more than a mid 3rd round draft pick for him.

That's true only if he has the resolve to hold out and stay away from the team. If he's under contract then eventually he won't have much choice other than to report and play. And he can't tank once he does report, because then he kills his value with whatever team he goes to. The Vikes hold the all the cards. He can report and play or sit out and go broke.

Re: Vikings to trade Harvin?
I heard a 49'ers fan call in to Sirius NFL Radio today suggesting SF should trade Alex Smith for Patrick Peterson. That's the kind of deal the Vikes should make right there..............
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. -
