Bad Pro Sports Teams
I was doing some looking around on some MLB sites today, getting ready for baseball season and the fantasy leagues. I came across the Tampa Bay Rays' (not Devil Rays anymore, just Rays) site and thought "...who are these guys?" This team has absolutely no shot of making the post season in 2008 or any other season. No shot of a winning record. Why?
Not just the Rays. There are a bunch of pro sports teams that need to be contracted. I understand that a team can fall on hard times and be down for some time, but sheez-lou-eez.
When I was a kid I remember the Royals being good. But that was way back in the 1900's. Now they don't even try. 1985 was a long time ago.
Some other teams that have no shot at all in their sports include:
Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Hawks, KC Royals, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals (Expos?), Milwaukee Bucks.
I'm sure I'm forgeting somebody else. Can't League commish's do something about bad/inept owners? Remember how bad the Mavericks were before Mark Cuban bought them?
Note: I didn't mention any NHL teams because I'm not sure if anyone even watches Canadian soccer anymore.

While I agree with some of those teams, the Atlanta Hawks are headin in the right direction. They have alot of young talent and are 15-16 on the year, only 5 games back. It could be worse, see the 4-29 Minnesota Timberwolves...

Re: Bad Pro Sports Teams
The Rays are getting close. Their problem is they have had alot of talent and HORRIBLE management. Now they are getting to the point where some of these prospects will develop into stars, with a little pitching they will be alot better, they just play in the same division as the Yanks and Sox. Same can be said for the Royals, Pirates, and Orioles, wasted drafts, terrible scouting and development. The Orioles would spend money but had no plan on what they were doing. The Nationals will make some headway in the next couple of years as well, especially in a large market with a new stadium. I think the Arizona Cardinals are CLOSE, but just not there yet...
It all comes down to management and starts at the top... You get a good owner that gets good management place and any team can win...

The Rays, the Royals and the Expos are just glorified farm clubs for the MLB.
Do they ever develop talent to keep? No it all goes away.
Pedro Martinez
Vlad Guerrero
Johnny Damon
Carlos Beltran
Aubrey Huff
Just to name a few.

Montreal Expos. I think the only time they ever came close to doing anything was during the strike shortened season of 94 (or was it 95?).

How can anybody overlook the Detroit Lions? Children will grow up to be,
not what they are told but what they see. -

Re: Bad Pro Sports Teams
At the end of the day sports is a business. If the ownership thinks they are making enough money the way things are, then I guess it is their decision as to how they choose to run their organization.
The Cubs are a great example. They have been making tons of cash year in and year out without winning anything. Eventually Boston, the Southsiders, and St Louis started winning Championships so now they have to spend some money and get it done. It was way too easy before for them to pull in the big cash and only put a decent product on the field.

Re: Bad Pro Sports Teams
The key is to get good guys in return, something alot of teams haven't been able to do... I would definately suggest reading Moneyball. Look how the A's have been able to turn some players. I don't see alot of people out there wanting Zito, Mulder, and Hudson right now. They just got three good prospects for Swisher, an above average player, but not a star. The Royals lost Damon, Dye, and Beltran and got nothing decent in return... It comes down to scouting and management.

Worst offender:
This team was bad BEFORE they opened their new stadium. Now that the owner has his new stadium and is making $$$ hand over fist, even with last place teams, the guy has no motivation whatsoever to spend a dime to improve his ball club. I fear, with Pohlad at the helm, that this is the direction that the Twins could go after their new ballpark opens, and I'll not be happy...

That's what makes the Johan deal such a big deal. They need to get top value for him. That also means they HAVE to deal him before the season starts...

Re: Bad Pro Sports Teams
Right now I have to say one of the worst teams in sports is the New York Knicks. Yes, they have a proud history but they have been terrible lately and they are not in a good situation right now. They have the highest payroll of any team in the NBA and a complete idiot running the show in Issiah Thomas who was terrible in Toronto, mediocre coach in Indiana, bankrupted an entire league in the CBA, and now has the Knicks in a hole that is going to take a long time to get out of.
