The 1st is the 17th pick and would have been used to fill the void at D-end. There would likely not have been anyone available at that slot who could produce what Allen is expected to. The Vikings have burned more than one 1st round pick on unproductive D-ends. Even the loss of the 3rd doesn't hurt the Vikings that bad as they still have their 2nd pick plus an additional pick in the 3rd round.

I think this trade proves that we want to win NOW. We now have a very competitive team, we just need Tarvaris and the WR's to step up now and we can win hopefully win the division now that B. Favre is gone.

If I try to think about it from both sides it seems pretty fair to me. The bigger question to me is how much the Vikes will be paying Allen. If it isn't out of sight, I think it is good for both teams.

I am a Vikings fan and absolutely LOVE this deal! DE was a big need for us and we just filled it with one of the best in the league. We give up our first round pick, which would have been used to draft a DE anyway that is probably not near as capable as Allen. We also give up both our 3rd rounders, one of which we got in a trade so considering what we're getting in return I think we did a great job. The Vikings are a team that is ready to make a run now and Allen was the missing piece of the puzzle on defense. Now if T. Jackson can step it up this year and Peterson can repeat some of what he did last year, the Vikings should be as tough as anyone in the NFC.

It will be a few years before we find out who got the best of this deal. Allen could stay dominant and the Chiefs could waste the picks or the Chiefs could find a couple superstars w/ those picks and Allen's production dips. Or somewhere in bewteen. You are kidding yourself if you think there's not much value in a first rounder and 2 thirds though. That is a huge investment. I don't really have a dog in the fight so I'll just hope it works out for both teams.

To answer my own question...they overpaid. That is provided the reports of 74mil over six years with 31,000,69 guaranteed are correct.

The good thing about the vikes is that they were well under the cap and could afford to sign him to this deal. but WOW that is huge money.

Two third-rounders as welll??? I was totally ok with giving up just one third rounder with the first pick, but wow. I think he is a hell of a player though.
Now, I just wish they would do something about the qb position. I was really really hopeful we would get Sage, but I guess that has gone by the wayside.

I agree the a first and 2 3rds are a large price for the trade and that the terms of the new contract are large but you have to consider the position. The Vikings are getting one of the best pass rushing DEs in the league, who had little support on the D line in KC. Now pair him with the Williams wall and who do opposing teams double? Granted the Vikings need some O-line depth and there is still a question at the QB position but they did not trade future draft picks and I am sure there is language in Allen's contract that protects the Vikings if he ever has issues with the "Glug Glug Vroom Vroom" again. As a Vikings fan I applaud the bold move by Wilf and the "Triangle of Authority" and hope like hell it works out. Just think the Ravens won a Superbowl with a great D and a stong running game. The Vikings have the running game and this could make the D great.

King Carl strikes again. OK, why would you not get anything less than the minimum for signing a player with a franchise tag? I'd much rather have the 2 first rounders than the 1st and 2 3rd round picks. I think the Chiefs have 13 picks in this draft now? If Carl manages to get at least 5 or 6 solid players from that I'd be surprised considering the Chiefs draft history under him. I'm sure someone out there would have done better than the Vikes offer had he shopped around some more.

A young proven pro-bowler for unproven rookies, I'd take that. It is alot, but it will be worth it. Just keep him away from The Annex and "power hour".

I think it's a "win" for both sides, but I do think the Vikes over-payed both in trade value and contract dollars. I guess we'll find out.
It's not like KC was going to contend for anything this year anyways. May as well get some extra picks and rebuild.

It's definitely a win-win. The Vikings need a pass rusher from the end position which they now have in a young player who has averaged almost 11 sacks per year in his first four years in the league. The Chiefs are in rebuilding mode and all of these picks should help them in the process. Also, Allen wasn't happy in KC. Unhappy players are a cancer to a team.

I like the trade overall but it may be a little pricey.
Draft Day won't be the same without a number 1 pick. My sons and I enjoy watching the first round and with the Vikes sitting out it just won't be the same.

Allen loved being in KC he just hated King Carl witch is the problem everytime when the Chiefs have problems trying to sign someone. KC now has 6 picks in the first 90 picks I hope they can fill some of there many voids. They have been drafting a lot better since Edwards got there then before he arrived if it was just Carl doing the drafting I would be really worried.
