Let me rephrase it then, since this has slipped far beyond my original intent and post..."One word: Herschel Walker".

What I intended to convey is that since the Herschel Walker trade, I have been very sensitive to giving up a great many draft picks for a single player. I feel that three high picks in a single draft represents "a great many draft picks".

Ignore where the thread went after that, and that was really my only thought.

Allen hasn't had a drink in months. He says he has quit. Also, in September if he remains trouble free, his old DUI's won't count in terms of any suspensions. The guy seems to be focused and has a lot of desire to prove that the Vikings made a great trade. He is only 26. He is an All Pro. When you consider that the Vikings would have had to use a #1 pick to get a player of his caliber, it is only giving up two 3rd rounders to insure that you are getting an All Pro DE. Considering that just a few seasons ago that the Vikings spent a #7 pick on Troy Williamson, this is a GREAT deal.

If you want to compare history. last season the Vikes wisely picked Marcus McCauley in the third round. So part of the question is, were those two picks in the third worth giving up two Marcus McCauleys?

Re: Was it too much for Jared Allen

What's missing in this discussion is the impact the move has on the local fan community. The previous owner tried his best to run the franchise into the ground. The Twins new stadium and the new Gopher coaches have at least given area sports fans something to get excited about (not saying that success will follow). The Vikings, OTOH, were at the fork in the road in terms of fans not caring what happens. Ziggy needed to make a move to show that he is committed to winning now, not 3 years down the road when draft picks may or may not develop. This trade shows that he will put his money on the line rather than simply talk a good game.

I could be mistaken, but didn't this move come after the vote on the new stadium? Or, have the lawmakers not yet decided?

I think another thing here, is that the clock is ticking on Childress....anybody who hires someone in such a public role whether it be Pollard, or Zygi wants that hire to work out to prove that they made the right move. Of course, this is just one possibility.....I will not be offended if people downgrade my post as I don't think my IQ is approaching genius, although, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last nite.
