Re: Cubs Interested in Jim Edmonds

I'd say that sticking with Pie and Reed Johnson is a better bet than these two other options.

We've had Lofton here before. He did well, but he was gone pretty quickly, too. He's aging, Edmonds is aging, and I just don't think they'll turn that corner.

Let's stick with the young guys, who are surrounded by experienced players, and watch them grow.

I have friends that have played with him in St. Louis and Anaheim. NOBODY like him in Anaheim and they were glad to see him go. Erstad and him almost came to blows daily... I am not going to mention names online because, it's still the internet and I don't want them to have to deal with the questions...

In theory I can see what is trying to be accomplished. The problem however is that Edmonds is a washed up, pompus ***.

Didn't he pretty much get run out of Anehiem b/c of constant bickering with other players? Sorry, I see someone already posted on that

Again, I don't think the risk is worth the marginal reward.

Fair enough. I'll have to take your word for it.

If you research it you will see that the main beef was Edmonds vs. Erstad, they hated each other. Guys on the team loved Erstad, hated Edmonds so he was gone...

I'm still waiting on Corey Patterson to develop or at least lay off a fastball over his head. Oh yeah -- that was a 6-season disaster. My point is -- who knows when and if Felix is going to hit well enough to be an everyday major league center fielder? I don't see the downside in signing Edmunds when you only have to pay him the minimum.

As a Cards fan, it will be quite strange watching Edmonds in a Cubs uniform. He will struggle in every game, except against the Cards, when he will hit 3 home runs every time and rob our hitters of at least one home run of our own each time.
Actually, his defense was never what many novice baseball fans thought it was. Edmonds can turn a routine "can of corn" into the Willie Mays over-the-shoulder catch in the 1954 World Series faster than anyone in baseball. He is an arrogant show-boating player that many other players do not like.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I guess my point is that Edmunds is actually putting up worse offensive numbers than Pie, so why not use Pie as a guy to use against righties and plays better CF right now rather than bringing in a washed up vet who really has no upside for the team...

I don't recall ever hearing anything negative about Edmonds in the Cards clubhouse. What kind of stories have you heard, bsball?

Re: Cubs Interested in Jim Edmonds

cubs deff. dont need lofton.... they need a lefty who can hit in the five spot... aka griffey junior, im sure the cubs could pry him away from the reds... that would allow fukudome to move to the number 2 spot which is way better for him and either soriano goes back to center or fukudome plays CF... now that would be the best hitting lineup in baseball

1. Soriano
2. Fukudome
3. Lee
4. Ramirez
5. Griffey Jr.
6. Soto
7. DeRosa
8. Theriot
9. Dont forget about Big Z and Marquis in this spot

why do the flag in jack trice always fly to the east?

There are only so many Griffeys, ARods, etc that are 19 and playing the majors every day. Pie just turned 23. Yeah, give up on him! Soto is 2 years older and was only ready this year (part of last year). Evan Longoria is the same age as Pie. Sizemore is 3 years older than Pie and hasn't yet turned into the MVP/All Star power hitting CF everyone thought. His D is still awesome, but still working on the offensive side of things where he's not consistent.
2. I'm trying to see how this is "so Cubs" and how Edmonds was ever a Cub killer? I've gone through the transactions this decade and haven't found another player signed that's ever been considered a "Cub killer"...

I'm just wondering about basis for these arguments...
1. What about Pie's offensive fundamentals scream to you that he has any chance at success? And just to let you know, I never advocated trading Pie for a veteran or 2. How about a couple pitching prospects to rebuild the farm system that has been single handedly destroyed by Jim Hendry over the last 4 years?

2. When looking through the transactions of the last decade did you miss Jeromy Burnitz? Washed-up former big hitters is a Jim Hendry speciality. And Jim Edmonds was a 2004 Cubs-killer, Zambrano-killer to be more exact.

1. I didn't say he was going to turn into a triple crown threat. I still think he'll end up being an every day CF. However, when was the last time teams traded minor league potential for minor league potential? Especially top pitchers? You give up quality to get win-now players. Pretty sure every MLB GM follows those rules, so I don't see how Pie brings two young, MLB-to-be pitchers, but that's a what if we can't really explore.
2. Sorry, I must have missed the part where Burnitz was ever considered a stud power hitter, with 22 HR/season, and a career .253 average. JE 2004 hit .268 against the Cubs (yes w/ 8 hrs) so i don't see "career killer" in there. Pujols was a Cub killer that season, hitting over .300 and 8 HRs against them. Can we get him off waivers?
