Looks like this is going to happen and Pie is going to be sent to Iowa: Jim Edmonds about to join Cubs -- ChicagoSports.com
About Pie, here is an alarming stat they displayed this weekend. With 2 strikes in the count he is batting .064 with 22 strikeouts. He has no plate discipline right now to be an everyday starter unless you are satisfied with having his defense over his low .200 batting average in the lineup. Johnson has been adequate defensively, possibly made the best catch of the year by any Cubs OF so far with that dive into the wall and his bat has been far superior to Pie's. Edmonds is an expirienced and in a platoon with Johnson should be OK for now even if he is not the player he used to be. Over the past 3 seasons he has a .376 OBP against right handers and that's what he'll probably be used against most with Johnson starting against lefties.

Blaahhh... Hopefully he can get some clutch hits quick... otherwise he will not be a favorite at Wrigley.

Count me as confused on this deal. In any case, heading to Wrigley tomorrow. As a bonus I get to watch Maddux pitch.

Again, I hated Edmonds when he was with the Cardinals but I really see this as a low risk/low cost move that if it doesn't work then you lose nothing and you just cut him again. I don't understand the infatuation with Pie, he is so frustrating to watch at the plate. He's not ready to be an every day big league player and it does him no good to only get about a hand full of at bats a week right now. At least with Edmonds you know what you are getting right now, with Pie you are either going to get a 3 strikeout game or a possible big hit or homer but with him right now the strikeouts are more likely than him coming up with hits.

I understand everyones frustrations with Pie, i'm included in that. I just don't see JE bringing any more than Pie though, thats all I'm really saying. JE is the same 3 K or HR guy as Pie at this point. I do agree that consistent ABs in AAA are req'd for Pie though.

I think I would stick with Pie and platoon him. How is he going to get better if he never plays?
As far as Edmunds, there are reasons why he was let go from the Padres, who are not exactly a top team this year. If he struggling defensively and offensively why would he be an upgrade over Pie?

As far as Edmunds, there are reasons why he was let go from the Padres, who are not exactly a top team this year. If he struggling defensively and offensively why would he be an upgrade over Pie? It's somewhat of the same situation the Big Hurt was in, the team was struggling and wanted to play some younger guys so the aging veteran off to a slow start is the logical dump. Pie needs to be sent down to play everyday. If the Cubs were last in the division I'd say go ahead and start Pie every day and see what he is made of but the Cubs are serious about winning this year and there is no time to let a slumping youngster work it out in the big leagues right now. Just take a look at Hill, they didn't want to mess with him right now either and the same is about to happen to Pie.
Edmonds can't possibly be any worse than Pie at the plate right now. Plus he was starting to bat better in May before he was released. His last 6 games he was hitting .278 with a .381 OBP and 3 K's and 3 BB in 18 AB. Pie in May has 1 more AB for a .263 average but 7 K's, 1 BB and a .300 OBP.
Again, this is not the end of Pie, if Edmonds struggles continues he'll get cut and if Pie hits well in Iowa he'll get sent back up. Pie needs to go down and work on his swing mechanics and shorten up his swing vs just trying to prove he can hit AAA pitchers like he has in the past when he killed the ball at Iowa. AAA pitching and MLB pitching are no where near the same. Just like Hill, he went down with the instructions to work on his release point and correct his mechanics not prove that he can strike out AAA hitters with his curveball.

Found these stats on Edmonds. His stats are not too bad at Wrigley, so hopefully him coming to the Cubs will help him.

Though he is 38 year old he wants to play for the Cubs to put a hurt on the Cardinals, as per M&M show today. He is expected to be in the lineup tomorrow

That is most definitely a killer.
