I'm nothing close to being a fan of soccer. But I like it enough. Can't and probably will never just sit down and watch and MLS game. Overall it's rather boring.
But if it's something significant like the US in the World Cup - I pay attention and might even have the game on. Although most likely won't be engrossed with it.
I wish I had the athleticism of the better soccer players, however. They really are fantastic athletes.

American soccer sucks, MLS is a joke. Soccer in England and the rest of Europe is a sight to see. The passion and excitement is infectious, you can't help but get excited. I really enjoy watching Champion's league games.

As for the baseball comparison.... Baseball is a game of over 350 small battles every game. Each pitch is a chance for something you have never seen.... But there's not much standing around at all. In mainstream American sports, there's a lot of time between plays.

Ill give them credit. They are athletes, but I have no interest in watching it at all. For me it was a game we played as kids before we got into football and basketball.

Soccer lacks the explosive play.
Watching guys halfway jog for 2 hours is pretty boring.
I would take a sport with 150 explosive plays like football vs 2 hours of snails pace activity.

j/k.
But it is a little bit of a similar situation for me. I really can't watch a regular, run-of-the-mill baseball game on TV. At least not without skipping a few innings while channel-surfing.
However - I am a season ticket holder down with the I-Cubs, attend several MLB games every summer, and thouroughly enjoy games in the stands. I might enjoy soccer better in person. Especially in the Euro environment as stated above.

Thanks so far, I guess I should explain. I'm writing a book on the subject of soccer and globalization...and one of the chapters will be on the (generally) negative perception of soccer that the USA has. It would be helpful if you gave me some feedback of what influenced you to have such opinions on soccer, and why they differ so much from people outside America.
for example: "soccer is boring/sissy/lame/gay" is something heard only here (in the US), what brings this opinion towards this sport. I'm looking for the opinion of those born in America ONLY. I'm looking to juxtipose the opinion of soccer of the US vs. the world.

I'm a big sports fan, but soccer is one of the very few I can't get into. For me it's too slow-paced, with too much action in the midfield rather than offense/defense situations. However, my greatest complaint about soccer is the general culture of the sport. A culture has been created in which faking injury is rewarded and dirty play away from the ball can go unpunished. It's a sport I have no respect and little interest for.

One of the biggest defensive strategies is to fool the other team into going offsides... What fun is that?
