Peavy to the Cubs?

FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - Cubs, Braves in running to get Pads' Peavy

Looks like it may happen. They would have quite the rotation next year, especially if the Cubs re-sign Dempster.

Re: Peavy to the Cubs?

Jon Miller mentioned it as well.

If I was a cubs fan, I'd be happy about that.

Re: Peavy to the Cubs?

Pevey will cost the Cubs alot in return. With the Dodgers out of the Peavy market they will make a huge run at Dempster. I don't see him returning to the Cubs. So you get Peavy and you will likely lose out Dempster and probably Smardzjia too... Personally, I would rather have Depster and Smardzjia.

Re: Peavy to the Cubs?

How much $$$ does Peavy command?

The word about the Cubs off-season moves has been that they really don't have much room salary wise. Unless they offload somebody (Lee, Rameriez, Soriano, Zambrano).

I threw the dice when they pierced his side

I would be happy, but also sadden. Look at the young players that may miss out. Lets say Rich Hill recovers, Sean Marshall explodes, Kevin Hart, Samardzjia, etc. Its a good problem to have, but at what point is the team not going to become the Yankees and stop trying to buy and great team and for once build a great team?

I'm not so sure on that. Dempster is 32, wants 5 years/$70M and is coming off a career year. Peavy is 27 and is a proven preformer. Giving up Samardzija is a steep price however. The Cubs have given up on young talent all too often.

Cubs are also reportedly inquiring about Sabathia and Burnett. Sabathia would obviously be better, Burnett isn't a top starter, but he'd be cheaper. How about let Dempster walk, sign Sabathia and keep Samardzija.

Peavy is worth it. I would assume Marshall, Pie, and Cedeno would be involved in the package to get him.

Re: Peavy to the Cubs?

I wouldn't expect the Cubs to make more than 1 big signing or trade this offseason if they retain both Dempster and Wood. I just don't see it happening without gutting out the team. If they make a deal for Peavy I'd love to see them include a swap of Adrian Gonzalez and Derek Lee if possible.

I like the idea of getting Peavy, but it's really not their pitching that is costing them in the playoffs....

I think they're already there. Hendry and Piniella have a long history of not trusting youngsters.

The Padres will not do the deal withough Samardzjia... They have no interest in Pie or Cedeno... Marshall and Smardzjia alone would do it.

The Padres won't get rid of Gonzalez, they are building the team around him, they aren't interested in getting older...

I'd make that deal. I've heard too many prima donna stories about Pie and we already know what you get with Cedeno.

As a GM, do you make that deal?

If I'm the GM of the Padres I do, if I am the Cubs GM I might, if I am going for a Championship right now... If I am looking to build a dynasty, no...
