All of Hendy's quotes made it sound like the Cubs were trying to do Kerry a favor. Nice spin, but that doesn't seem to be what Kerry wanted to do. Sounds to me like they were just trying to save some coin because they already have Marmol.
Their bullpen better turn out to be dominating or Hendry has some explaining to do. Kerry deserves better if he really wanted to stay and wasn't actually looking for the big contract.

The way I read this story is, Wood wanted a certain amount of money. Hendry knew it and didn't want to pay it. Wood would've loved to stay a Cub, but for a price. I was never sold on Wood all season last year. He made me nervous every time he entered the game.

I hope he finds a place he can close.

Can Marmol handle closing? I still think that's what might happen unless something different has been said somewhere.

Watch him go somewhere next season and have an even better year and he get a ring.

He would have played for a one year deal. It couldn't have been too pricey. He made me nervous too at times, but you can never have too many good arms in the pen. Heck, you could have swapped roles with him and Marmol.

I just hope the money they "saved" on not signing Wood they use to address other needs and not just be cheap.

I would think that eventually the plan is to move Marmol to closer, but its not going to happen right away.
I think it came down to the fact that Hendry knew what Wood would be worth on the open market, and he didn't want to pay it and didn't want to lowball him. I do think he was doing him a favor, in a roundabout way. Wood will be fine.

We don't know the price, but I'm sure Hendry knew what it was. I'd rather see the bullpen weaken and our offense strengthen. I think Hendry realizes this as well. Hopefully he's planning on making some big moves in the off season, and getting rid of Wood makes it seems like he does.
Would I rather have Wood than Marmol right now closing? Yes.
Would I rather have Wood or another strong bat in the lineup? I'd take the bat every time.

With that said, I am not completely unhappy with Marmol being the closer. I think he definitely has it in him... I just think year 1 of closing will be an adventure.

Losing Wood is going to be a hit to the club no matter what anyone else thinks. The guy was a bulldog and never quit.
