So the Cardinals tried a 68 yard field goal at the end of the half. They did a free kick where there was no pass rush. What is a Free Kick and how come it isn't used more?
BTW, it was great seeing the Giants Coach completely confused with what Arizona was doing at the end of the half. It was some great strategy by the Cardinals.

In the NFL and in high school, there is a rule that a team can attempt a free kick after a fair catch. It happened a couple of years ago in eastern Iowa, and was the gamewinner.
A free kick is basically that...free. No rush. A kickoff is one type of free kick. The kick after a safety is a free kick.

The excitement was rather drained from the moment when Rackers completely whiffed the kick and it fell harmlessly into the field of play. I don't understand why he didn't use the tee, instead of kicking it from a hold.

I believe at the end of a half you can call for a fair catch on a punt and get a free kick regardless of how much time is on the clock. I am sure someone else will wikipedia it or something but woody paige had an article about it on thursday or friday and that is the explanation he gave.

I don't understand why he didn't use the tee, instead of kicking it from a hold. In the NFL, a tee cannot be used after a fair catch free kick. However, a tee can be used in High School after a fair catch per the NFHS rules.

Free Kick Fail.
Would have been way cooler if he didn't mess with the placement of the ball 50 times and then shank it 20 yards downfield.
