    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

Too many games decided by a coin flip, there needs to be some way that each team gets the ball atleast once. One thing I like about the NFL OT is that it keeps special teams, IE kickoffs and punts, a part of the action. I say have it like it is now, coin flip, team kicks off, if the offense scores the defense gets the ball and has until they turn it over to score and match them.

Four of the last five overtime playoff games have been won by the team that LOST the coin toss (i.e., went on defense first).

Should we really start changing rules every time something doesn't go a superstar's way?

    I like this:

    OVERTIME RULES
    * Overtime periods are 15 minutes.
    * Each team gets one possession to score. If, after each team has had one possession, one team is ahead, that team wins. If the teams are tied after each has had a possession, the next team to score wins.
Don't confuse hope for a plan.

I wouldn't mind college rules, except push them back to midfield. At the same time I don't mind the NFL rules usually. It is kind of cool, for example in the SD-Indy game, where it was a run-off-the-field touchdown. Game over. Like a walk-off home run.

This is the idea I like if I understand you correctly. If at the end of the 4th quarter the game is tied, just switch ends and go like it's a new quarter. The team that had the ball at the end of regulation still has the ball.

Yep...that's what I meant. It would make for some interesting strategy late in the game...

teams would be forced to be aggressive - going for it on 4th down, going for 2pt conversions and aiming for the endzone.
If there is no kicking, how does the overtime get started? Who gets the ball and where? How do teams get the ball back after a TD if there is no kicking?

If only kickoffs are allowed...say team A returns the kickoff to its own 25. Team B defense holds on a 3-and-out and gets the ball back at Team A's 25-35. But then Team A holds on a 3-and-out and gets the ball back at their own 25-35 again. Team A is stuck with a long field, while Team B seems to get a short field. Doesn't seem too fair.

Jump Ball (BBall style) at the 50. First team to get the football into the endzone scores. But no D or O, just put 22 men on the feild and let them kill each other over the ball. No plays stop either, just hit, fight, and pull the ball out to do whatever it takes. That should liven up OT :)

Eh, the NFL is professional football, the best of the best. Sudden death fits well here.

What if the BEST Offense never gets to even have the ball in OT because they didn't get the 50/50 coin toss?

I forgot to include that kickoffs are allowed after a score and at the beginning of the overtime.

    Re: Thoughts on NFL OT?

I think they should have a pass, punt, and kick competition to settle a tie score. What ever team wins 2 out of the 3 is the winner.
