Then, he was called out on a close double play when the replay clearly showed he beat the throw, keeping one of the premier baserunners in the game off of the bases when he also represented the tying run. That takes a lot of presssure off the pitcher, not having to worry about a runner.
You simply can't make umpires sacrificial lambs for players who throw fits, their place in the game is much too important. Even when the ump is the one who initiates contact? When a player does it he is suspended. How come the umps get a free pass when they do it? Kind of a double standard.

Everything about the way baseball is run, is ridiculous. The people in charge are complete idiots.

Hell, I hadn't even thought of the premise for this thread until this afternoon, when I remembered that ESPN had made somewhat of a big deal about the guy called up to take Manny's spot.
Meanwhile, David Stern is crying in his beer somewhere.

Kind of a double standard. Very true. A few weeks back an umpire issued an apology for placing his hand on the Magglio Ordonez's shoulder and "guiding" him toward the dugout after Ordonez had struck out.
Had a player done the same thing, even as a friendly gesture, the result would have probably been an ejection/fine and/or suspension.

I'm a Cards fan who agrees with you. I am not crying over the fact that Z is out though...

From what I understand that's kind of rare - from what I've been led to believe except under special circumstances (such as end of the season/playoffs) a rotation isn't determined by the game schedule, but by days. As in, in a 5-man rotation a pitcher would pitch once every 5 days, not once every 5 games in order to keep the pitchers on a specific set routine. Setting up a rotation based on game schedule could potentially jack around with that routine.
EDIT - appears you may be right, though, as Zambrano's scheduled to take the mound on Thursday
