Edit: I guess not, he was already designated for assignment and not on the 25 man.

Freel wasn't on the 25 man, but I believe Farney still is.

He was being payed something like 5 mill a year for nothing. At least they dumped him and dont have to pay it all.

Exactly.

Although to the credit, Jake Fox has been a pleasant surprise that I think has made them rethink things. At the beginning of the year I was thinking Fox was good trade bait, and still is, but seems to be one that might just be a keeper now.

I don't think so. That is one of the reasons I divorced myself from the Cubs a couple of years ago.

- Cubs realize that he is useless, and send his *** to Baltimore for Ryan Freel. Upon arriving in Chicago, Freel calls it a "dream come true" to play for the Cubs and tells the equipment manager to burn his Baltimore equipment bag.
- Before his first game as a Cub, Freel is scratched from the line-up with a tight hamstring.
- Realizing that Freel is also worthless, the Cubs DFA him, and sign Jeff Baker from the Rockies.
- Cubs trade Freel to KC for next to nothing - which is what they got when they signed Gathright back in February.

Trading for Baker was just stupid because he should be cut as well. They should have seen what it would take to get this guy from the Royals: Mark Teahen Stats, News, Photos - Kansas City Royals - ESPN He's a former outfielder turned infielder this year so he could be a cheaper version of Mark DeRosa. That and he's instantly be the leader on the Cubs in batting average amongst the regular starters...

The cycle will be complete once they cut Baker's worthless *** too and realize that was a pointless deal as well

Right, but the idea is that if they hadn't signed Gathright in the first place, none of what happened later would have happened.

They could have just re-signed Jim Edmonds and been done with it. Re-sign Edmonds, and letting go of DeRosa doesn't look so bad, as Fukudome could have slid over to right when Bradley was hurting early in the year.

I think people are ripping on Hendry for no reason on this move. Freel was a "low risk, medium reward" pick up. He costed the cubs nearly no money. Hendry took a chance and it didn't work out. Didn't exactly bite him in the ***.

Now the other moves he has made, I can't defend at all.

partly true....
he is a former outfielder, turned infielder (3b), turned back to outfield when alex gordon started the 07 season in KC. now teahan is back to 3b while gordon rehabs. i also think he caught some in the minors and pitched a bit in college. kc will be stupid to let a man like him go but it sounds inevitable.
