As of yesterday, Morneau was leaning towards not trying to defend his title. I hope that he passes - he's back swinging well and the derby can mess up your stroke.
You do realize that a lot of players screw around at the end of batting practice and have home run derbies among themselves right? The home run derby doesn't do a thing to their swings. They're all paid professionals with hitting coaches that dissect every part of their swing. A lot of them golf during baseball season and it doesn't do anything to their swings.
I heard he only wasn't going to compete if he didn't make the All-Star roster. He didn't want to make the trip to St. Louis for just the derby.
The article on the official Twins site still mentions passing on the competition after he was named to the team by the player's vote. Morneau not getting the fans' vote for 1B is a good example of how the east coast fans are out of touch with reality.
