Is golf a sport?
I vote no. I also don't think golfers are athletes.
I'm an avid golfer and if I was good enough to be a pro I wouldn't think any different.
Matt Perrault thinks there is defense in golf because the course is the defense. The course does have a defense but one player doesn't defend another.

Sport? Absolutely.
Are folders necessarily athletes? Debateable and individual. Any "sport" can ask the same questions.

Re: Is golf a sport?
What would you classify golf as then?

Re: Is golf a sport?
It depends on your definition of a sport.
I'd say it does require some athleticism/coordination, but its more of a game than a sport.

Re: Is golf a sport?
I would say its a sport, probably one of the more difficult ones as well.

Re: Is golf a sport?
What is your definition of a "sport"???
To me Golf is a game. It does require Athletic ability and skill and tons of hand eye cordination, along with tons of other things that have to go together at the exact same time in order to hit a ball straight.
I've played golf since I was a little guy, and have a 3 to 4 handicap, and I've also seen people who claim golf doesn't involve "athletic ability or skill" try to play before and whiff, hit the ball 10 feet off the tee, etc...
To be successful is alot harder than people think, but as far at the "sport" thing goes, I do not consider it a sport. It's not even close to the same level as football or basketball

Re: Is golf a sport?
Out of curiosity, if it takes all that skill and coordination and ability what would make it not a sport?
-
Re: Is golf a sport?
It is definitely a sport. So is bowling.
It is just not a sport that requires one to have traditional athletic abilities.
-
Re: Is golf a sport?
It has a ball....good enough for me to call it a sport

Re: Is golf a sport?
A sport to me requires strenuous physical activity. Unless you're old or pretty overweight, it doesn't take too much work to walk 18 holes and swing a club 100 times a round.

The One Good Thing About Tom Watson Losing The British Open - Balls Deep - Deadspin
If there's one silver lining to Tom Watson's agonizing 2nd place finish at the British Open yesterday, it's that we are now spared from old people suddenly thinking they are somehow useful again.

So is mowing the lawn, roofing a house, and digging a hole in 90 degree weather. Should we call those sports?
