Code Blue on AFL, Iowa may move to AFL "Lite"

Reports on the web today indicated that the Tampa Bay Storm President Jim Borghesi has indicated on Facebook that the AFL is dead, with an announcement pending this week.

There has been a lot of speculation swirling on the internet that the strongest AF2 franchises will be incorporated in to a new AFL "Lite" league reminiscent of the AFL in the 80's and 90's with lower salaries and smaller markets.

Rumored changes include Iowa joining Spokane, Tulsa, and Louisville and W/B-Scranton joining the still solvent AFL teams (Chicago, Grand Rapids, Utah) to form an indoor league.

Depends who you ask. In my opinion, yes. Arena Football purists will tell you that the league lost a lot of it's character when they moved to big markets, CBAs, big paychecks, and with the implementation of the "Elway" rule which allowed substitutions.

I'll admit, I enjoy Arena ball over the NFL. I know I'm in the minority when I say that. I did a lot of eye-rolling when the AFL moved more from being a niche developmental league to being spring pro football, a la USFL or the XFL.

The AF2 now is a very entertaining league, but their players' compensation is peanuts. There has to be a middle-ground between the AFL's high-5-to-6 figure salaries and the $4000 an AF2 player makes. The speculation surrounding the future of arena ball and the "AFL Lite" solution I believe solves that in allowing a foot in the door to the NFL opportunity for players in smaller markets.

As long as we have a team and can keep playing I'm happy. AFL2 is fine by me. Any upgrade would be gravy as long as the ticket prices don't go up much.

I hope this isn't just the beginning of the circle again that led to Arena Football growing beyond the financial abilities of the smaller markets.

I had heard mention on something along these lines earlier this year as long as the barnstormers are playing i don't care if its afl2 or afl or afl lite. Thou I wonder if this league if it does form will have its own viedo game like afl did. It would be fun to be the barnstormers

I loved that game. It was quite different, as is the game in general, from playing Madden or College Football.
