I'd say that's premature. But, they're looking pretty impressive in the off-season. Texas will be tough, though, and probably be my favorite pre-season. And the Angels, while losing some talent, still have a great manager. It should be a great division next year.

carlos silva has a 5.06 era in the venezuelan winter league. not a good choice for the cubs if they can't get rid of his contract. i can't imagine he is competing for the number 5 spot in the rotation.

Texas really came on last year, I agree. Oakland tends to randomly get good all of a sudden some years, although I don't see that happening next year. And the Angels are going to be solid. We'll see. I see the M's taking the Wild Card--not the division, but I can't decide who's going to have less flaws between Texas and California/Anaheim/Los Angeles.

Of course it's premature. It's December. That was my way of saying that I really like what they have done and Anaheim is probably taking a considerable step back this year.

He's also coming off shoulder surgery. Bruce Levine said the scouts down in venezuela have liked his progress so far this winter though FWIW. What do expect to get when you want to essentially trade cancer though. The 9 million will be nice though. sounds like capps is on the radar right now

Is the $9 million confirmed anywhere? If so, I still like the trade from a Mariners perspective, but not nearly as much.

    EDIT:
Never mind, just saw it on ESPN.

no kidding, if i see that jerk with a cubs uniform on, i may very well not watch a single game this year. but maybe i won't anyway since sandberg will be in iowa this summer. man, i'm going to see a lot of i-cubs games this season. more excited about that than any of the chi cubs moves, so far.

Bingo. It seems like everybody's been brainwashed that we must get rid of Bradley, no matter what. I think it's stupid. If we're going to pay him, we might as well give it one more year. Maybe this new batting coach could get him back on track. Probably a moot point now, unfortunately. Hendry sucks.

The only thing that makes me not completely hate this trade is the money we are getting back from Seattle. Hopefully we can sign Byrd and Capps.

This gives them some extra cash to spend on an OF.
This is the deal I saw reported on ESPN this afternoon by Buster Olney. I think the salary relief makes this deal a clear winner for the Cubs. Even if Silva is awful, the get rid of the similarly awful, cancerous Bradley and they come out ahead in the checkbook.

From the Ms point of view I LOVE this move. We get an everyday LF for our 7th or 8th starter and moneywise, that make a ton more sense for us as well.

Grade wise: A for the Ms and B- to C+ for the Cubs
    .

No, you get a clubhouse ******* who will quickly wear out his welcome with the other 24 guys on the roster.

Re: Cubs to Trade Bradley to Ms for Carlos Silva

The always wonderful Desipio.com take on this whole thing. I'll cut and paste the first part of it, hit the link for the rest of it. It's worth the read - and just for the record, anyone who thinks that the Cubs would have been better off keeping Bradley around needs to have their head examined. It wouldn't have mattered if they got a box of Beech-Nut and a bucket of Big League Chew; he needed to be gone. Doesn't anyone remember that the team suspended him the last two weeks of the season, and that Bradley didn't appeal it?

I was a defender of Bradley over the summer; the guy played hard and was one of the few Cubs on the roster to show some emotion during the game. However, it soon became apparent that the signing was a mistake, and that it would be better for both sides to part ways.

    Anyhow...on to the article.

If there was any wonder whether the Cubs were going to trade Milton Bradley this offseason, it probably ended the night Lou Piniella was asked at the winter meetings what they were going to do with him and he said, “Look, ah-ah, he played 125 ah-ah, 130 games for us last year, ah-ah, he, ah-ah, look, we’re trying to trade him.”

We need to play poker with Lou sometime.
