How did Robby Alomar not make the HOF

The guy is clearly one of the top 5 second baseman of all times. I realize he spit on an umpire. That is no reason to not make the HOF. THey need to take away the voting from Sportwriters and give it to someone else. Like players and GM's.
Sportwriters are a bunch of old guys who get bent when a player does not grant an interview.

I understand what you are saying...but Alomar shouldn't need any favors to get in the HofF! He was that good!

Robby Alomar was better at Baseball than Cal Ripken. Cal Ripken was better at dealing with the press and having everybody like him.
Robby Alomar was actually considered to be a really nice guy before the spitting incident.

There are a few voters who think that the first ballot HOF players need to be super super stars - the Willie Mays or Hank Aaron types. Alomar doesn't quite fit that mold, didn't make it to 3000 hits, never won an MVP award. He will probably make the HOF in the next year or 2.
