Mark McGwire just informed the AP that he used steroids "on and off for nearly a decade". Big shocker there.

From espn.com " Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball's home run record in 1998.McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade."

He seemed like a classy guy. Probably just got caught up in the "steroid era". He was a lot better person than Barry Bonds ever was.

I guess I don't give him much credit for it. For years, deny...deny...deny. Just consistently lied to everyone. Suddenly, he admits it.

Just like a politician that "admits" having an affair after the media gets ahold of it. Or Vick for "admitting" he played a major role in a dog fighting ring after he denied it for weeks.

Got caught. Denied and lied. Then later when there was no more room left to lie, come out publicly and admit doing wrong, in some feeble attempt to get some sort of respect.

No offense dude, but this is BS statement. We don't know anything about these players. Barry Bonds is construed as a bad guy because he's never liked the media, so writers and reporters naturally say he's a bad guy because he's standoffish with them. Minus the Jeff Kent episode and little blips here and there, Bonds has actually received a great deal of praise from teammates and managers like Jim Leyland, Bruce Bochy and Dusty Baker.

Just because Bonds wasn't bear hugging people when he crossed home plate and sprinting to right field like Sosa, doesn't mean that he was automatically a bad guy. McGwire denied steroids to congress just like all these other players did, and if they're going to come down on Bonds for perjury, the same should be done to McGwire, Palmiero, Clemens and the rest.

Came out now since he is back in the league as the Cardinals batting instructor. Didn't want to get drilled by the media about it in every city the Cardinals go into.

I'm not sure McGwire ever said he did not take steroids. He just avoided answering the question at every turn. None the less, Your point is still valid and I definitely agree with it.

I mostly agree with this. I still think Bonds is an overall jerk type, but your last sentence is 100% accurate.

Yeah, you know what.....I am with you on this one. And I really liked McGwier while I was growing up. His publicist probably showed him his low Hall of Fame vote/numbers/percentages from the sports writers and said that coming out like this will be his best chance at getting into the hall. (I.E. people forgiving A-Rod for example.....not me....he cheated, and does not deserve HOF honors because of it.)

He freaking lied to our US congress/senate. Every one of these guys that cheated and used.... do not EVER belong in the HOF. Think of all the guys out there that did it the right way..... never got opportunities to play....and out of the profession due to these type of guys.

I am glad when they do say that they did it though, but actions speak louder than words.........you still don't get HOF honors in my book.

Jose Canseco has said that there has already been a known steroid user inducted into the HOF *cough*RickeyHenderson*cough*.

Take that for what it's worth I guess.
