Profootballtalk.com has heard that Mike Leach, formerly of Texas Tech, is a candidate for the Raiders' head coaching job.
Leach's hire would create a lot of excitement, but the fit is terrible if owner Al Davis really believes JaMarcus Russell can be salvaged. Leach's offense requires an accurate quarterback, whose arm strength isn't necessarily even mediocre because of the number of 5-10 yard routes the receivers run. Seeing if Leach's system could work in the NFL would be great fun, but Bruce Gradkowski would be a much better bet to run the eccentric coach's offense.
Another Raiders fan here, and Leach would be about the biggest name hire they could probably get. But then what would they do with McFadden and Bush at RB? They have a very good TE in Zach Miller but their WR are just not very good. There would be no way Leach's offense could work there. Then again, could anyone's?
Al has to do something to make a splash if he's dead set on firing Cable (which I am not sure I agree with). Leach wouldn't be a terrible hire, if nothing else it brings the attention that Al loves...
Let's see, a guy who seemingly has a little trouble with administration going to a team that is run by a power hungry owner. I wonder how this will end.
